one thing you have to understand is that he HAS to declare this conviction to insurance companies and they either will charge the earth or will say no.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

My husband says that the ban starts from when he is legally able to drive, so therefore he would not be able to drive a moped until he is 17.

Does that mean he'd also be able to drive at 17? Using the ban up on the moped? Or still banned from driving for a year? Can't believe the OP would seriously plan on getting him a moped

The ban starts from when you apply for your provisional license. So if he applies on his 16th birthday it will start from then as it gets stamped.

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Motoring board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

• Your son has already proven he's not responsible enough to be let loose on the road. Do you really need to know the answer to the question you just asked?

I DID NOT WANT TO GO INTO TO MUCH DETAIL BUT WITH PEOPLE POSTING THINGS LIKE THIS I WILL TELL YOU . HE WAS IN WITH THE WRONG CROWD AND 2 OF THEM ( OLDER) FORCED HIM INA WAY HE HAD TO DO IT AND 2 OTHERS INTO THE CAR WHERE THEY FORCED TO SIT IN THE BACK OF A TWO DOOR CAR AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN FOR A SPIN AND IT LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED THE OTHERS LEGGED IT BUT MY SON WAS KNOCKED UNCONSIOUS AND THE POLICE HAD TO GET HIM OUT WITH THE AMBULANCE SO HE WAS NOT THE ONE DRIVING CLAIRE , THAT IS WHYHE GOT BANNED
THANKYOU

A lot of insurers won't touch him with a bargepole once he is allowed to drive, you know. Insurance for young lads is bad enough as it is (my son's was £1800 for the first year for a little old Pug 106), without the added bonus of a driving ban.
