Police travel - conning the train people.

OK I'll set the record stright. I work for the Met. I get free bus, train and tube travel as part of my contract. it covers 70 miles from my station of work, on duty or off in uniform or not.
If i identify myself as a police officer I then take FULL responsibility of what ever happens on that train, bus etc. If i am asked by the guard to deal with a situation I am obliged to act upon it in any way I see fit. Be it call ahead for back up of if I have personal equiptment with me then I MUST arrest and detain for what ever offence has been commited.
I do not earn 33k per year (i wish) more like 25k before tax, I do not get discount at subway or Mc donalds or any where. I'm some times lucky and get a cuppa from a nice old lady who's just been mugged while i take a statement from her.
So all the people on here who are moaning, please get a grip, next time you see a copper showing his warrent card on the train you should at least feel a little safer about using public transport.0 -
"Police travel - conning the train people"
What a riduculous thing to say without knowing the facts. As has been said, a lot of forces allow free travel on and off duty. I have certainly used it off duty, albeit not very often as im not a fan of public transport. If I am accompanied by a family member etc I will not use it for their safety, just in case. I have no problems using it when alone and am more than willing to step in (which I have done in the past).
The only problem I see with it is that you get your badge pretty much as soon as you join up. This leaves young in service officers with no training, very vulnerable if they use it to travel with.
Its not the fault of Police officers that armed forces personnel cannot travel for free also. Personally I think they deserve it although the whole reason Police are given this privilege is because of the support they can offer the train/bus staff is something does go wrong. With all due to respect, a great soldier cannnot arrest a person and then deal with the mountain of paperwork that comes with it.0 -
SO, are we going to start attacking NHS staff who get discounts at various establishments as well then? Or is it just the case that there have been some unfortunate news stories about the police lately????0

I totally agree. I work for one of the counties and totally feeling those comments.
I actually make less than 25K more like 23K due to no london weighting allowance.
I get free rail travel on duty and off duty. In fact we seldom get any perks and I didn't expect to when I joined. As for the rail/ bus travel I have dealt with quite incidents ranging from:
* nuisance behaviour a bunch of kids with a staffy trying to harass and intimidate bus users on the top deck (threw em off),
* stopped people criminally damaging rail/ bus property (by doing grafiti and starting small fires!)
* intervened with heated situations where staff were being verbally abused/ threatened
* aggressive beggars
* thrown off drug users
* assisted with ticket inspectors when faced with an aggressive fare dodger (searched him and gave them the money he professed not to having!).
* managed to intervene and help an offduty tube worker who was being threatened to give his money and phone to a lowlife. I pushed the scummer out of the way and dragged the tube worker off the train when it stopped.
Plus countless other situations like this.
So 13000 next time your on a crowded train, you may be totally oblivious to the potential pickpockets watching you - but maybe if your lucky theres an offduty officer watching them.
Or next time u have a bunch of aggressive/ nuisance people on the train making you feel on edge (we have all experienced it at some time). Maybe, just maybe there will be someone to intervene just at the right minute.
We did get a discount in the local Subway, but when it stopped officers used somewhere cheaper and now the amount of fights that occur in there has tenfolded and they now employ a private security guard on weekends. Which works out more than when a dozen often armed PC's were passing through the shop several times in an hour (what better deterrent could you have?!) Fair play to their manager for making his choice, no-one begrudges him of it.0 -
in addition to the last it would be nicer if the job let us carry our protective equipment (handcuffs, cs spray etc) to and from work/ home with us as it would a lot easier to deal with the above incidets and easier to make an arrest without back no back up or phone signals.0

Police Officers are NEVER off duty.
Quit being an idiot, just because your envious doesn't give you the right to slag police officers off.
Its one of the perks of the job... and my god Police Officers work hard.
'They have something you haven't got'.... gee how are old you five??
Why don't you become an officer and then benefit from not having to pay for travel.:A'Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much'My Challenge has begun!!!
