Awwww AM that sucks! What happened? Did it just go "pop" or not start???

I can't even remember which one you got in the end :) Terrible... self proclaimed petrolhead and I forget stuff like that lol! I have a feeling there was some disagreement about what car you were getting or something? Might be remembering wrong!

It starts but cuts out, something to do with the engine apparently, it's an Alfa Romeo  i at lest thought it would last longer than 3 weeks before breaking down

Oh right... Oddly we advised a mate not to get an Alfa... wouldn't listen. Now he's grumbling because he knows everyone told him not to get one... It's cost him a minor fortune.
Cutting out could be a host of problems - some minor, some pretty serious... Minor stuff would be loose LT leads, problems with HT leads and distributor cap, coil or condensor fault (actually that one is easy to check if he knows a bit about mechanics... get him to check for sparks on all the plugs - might be something very very simple to fix like new plugs or new HT leads), could be fuel issue - either fuel pump, blocked filter, blocked jets from contaminated fuel - and it could be serious: engine management system depending on model or cam shaft drive etc...

I'd suggest he does some checking for the minor stuff first to rule that out before handing it over to a garage unless ofcourse he bought it from a garage. If he did then call them and get them to collect it ASAP and fix it.

Mmmmm it depends on the type of knocking but I'd say it is in that case either the starter motor, the fuel pump or if it's a very heavy knocking you're looking at the cam shaft and then I doubt it's worth repairing... :( Starter motor or fuel pump I would replace (fuel pump would be a very fast knocking - almost tapping noise).

And no Sami i DON'T know everything before you say it! :rotfl: I am just a selfconfessed petrol head and I've spent too many days when I was younger taking landrovers apart (and most of them didn't have the original engines because we wrecked them off roading lol) and then mini's and a multitude of older cars that I had to keep running one way or another ;) You learn quick when you have to :)

Proper landrovers, the one's that you beat a sheet of metal to the rough shape of a door and off you go? :rotfl: Love em!

My house is a smelly tip, I need to go to asda for shopping, half the stuff in my fridge is out of date or rotten, and I can't be bovvered....

Going to enjoy my cuppa tea then get a start with a bin bag and some air freshner :D

The AA man said he thinks it will be a bottom engine recon or something like that.
He reckons it's gonna be an expensive job, OH said he will pay out £400 to fix it, I think it's not worth it, we have only paid £400 to the car so far, and need to pay the other £400 to his mate, oh it's just a big mess.

    Well car aside.
We have decided we are going to get Bubs a crib for our bedroom, and just leave the cot for the boys room.
We have a double bedroom with a built in cupboard/wardrobe but it's going to be difficult to fit the cot in because of where the window, cupboard doors and radiator are all situated.
I've looked on Kiddicare and they have got a crib with matress and bedding set for £50 but theres only one left! :(
What other sites are there barring kiddicare, mother care, babies r us that are good value?

Yup that's the ones... I used to have a 1964 Series IIA 2.25 litre petrol - my baby! Got an amazing 15 miles to the gallon on a good run ;) I do miss them but we don't have a garage or room for an extra car here so sadly that will have to wait till we have a bigger house and pref a double garage...

AM - sounds like it's the Camshaft then if the AA man reaconed on a bottom end rebuild... could be the big end bearings but it shouldn't cut out if it was them... (sorry to everyone I am boring to death! LOL) I'd say it's a new camshaft, sleeves and all associated omph - unless your mechanic is very cheap and can get some good condition spares 2nd hand it's going to be over £400... - if it's not economical to repair it then make sure your OH looks at selling the parts seperately for spares - you might be able to make most of the £400 back from breaking the car up instead of selling it to a scrappies :)

I'll just see what Stuart (the mechaninc) says tommorrow, if it's not worth it then he'll make sure i get the best price for it or the spares, he's got a soft spot for me mum too which is a bonus lol

OH says he's not going to give his mate the rest of the money so thats not going to go down well! I'm sure he didnt realise it was going to die within a couple of weeks, but from what I know of his mate he will probably say dont worry about the rest of the money, i'm just not going to get involved.

The mechaninc buys, fixes and sells cars for a living too so he will be able to sort us out a half decent car on the cheap for now, cos I cant go without a car for too long, i know it's not a nessesity but I really cant cope without one! and now i'm worrying whats gonna happen when we have the baby, the hospital is a 20 min drive away, even though there is a perfectly good hospital just down the road they stopped maternity services a few years ago
