Going vegan......old style?!

I have just spent a week reading this thread with great interest. I watched a YouTube film of Dr Neal Barnard talking about why he recommends a vegan diet for health and weight loss about 3 months ago and decided to try it. He recommends a low fat, high fibre vegan diet and I have to say it is working for me so far! I am not 100% vegan yet as I still have some things to use up. Also I have decided not to be too strict when eating out if it means I can't eat. However, I am enjoying this way of eating so much that I want to stick to it where I can. This thread has been brilliant for inspiration and recipes. Keep up the good work!0

Another recipe, tried and proven...
We eat a lot of chickpeas, I was bored with making curry or chole with them and wanted to try something different. Made this a few nights ago, and served with salad and pitta bread. Visiting carnivores asked for the recipe!
I substituted frozen spinach, normal salt, passata, and lemon juice from a bottle to keep the costs down. The smoked paprika is well worth the investment - really makes the dish. I bought it for 95p in A*DA, but I have since found it slightly cheaper at M*rrisons.

That looks very tasty and I have bookmarked the recipe. I have all the ingredients in, except the smoked paprika, thanks for the heads-up on the cheapest place to buy it too!31.5/1000

Talking of chickpeas I recently tried a couple of unusual but really easy recipes using chickpea flour, known as Gram flour in India. I bought it in Sainsburys v cheaply (randomly placed on its own, not in flour or Indian ingredients areas).
The recipes are here, one Indian (Gujarati Pudlas) and one Italian (Farinata) - both tasty:
http://www.givemesomespice.com/2010/10/gujarati-pudlas-savoury-pancakes-made-with-vegetables-and-chickpea-flour/ - with this one, I did saute the veggies and cool them first before adding to the batter. (Can't remember where I got the link so thanks if it came from someone's post on here - some great veggie recipes there )

Something different, cheap, nutritious, and everyone seemed to enjoy it with brown rice.
I doubled the recipe and made it in the SC, the day before I went into hospital for day surgery.

Hi there, I haven't read all the posts so apologies if I'm asking a question that's already been answered but does anyone know if there's a list of foods that are vegan that I can buy in the supermarket eg Hartleys Strawberry Jam is vegan, as is marmite and rice milk etc?? I have very little time to cook OS at the mo and would be great if I could just fill my basket with stuff I knew was vegan (other that fruit and veg obvs)
Wanting to try going vegan, mainly for health reasons but also for ethical. I'm a bit worried about what I'll be able to eat as I can't eat wheat! Thanks in advance for any advice!Credit Card Debt:[STRIKE]£12991[/STRIKE] £12526

Hi B17c, many of the supermarkets do lists of their products that are suitable for different dietary requirements, including vegan and GF. IME they are not 100% as they occasionaly have an incorrect listing or do not include things a vegan would eat but they have fears of cross contamination issues and err on the side of acution. Are you fully GF or just having to avoid wheat, as I haven't noticed that as a listing.
There is also an app called is it vegan of which I know NOTHING but you can have a look at it here http://isitvegan.net/
This could be worth looking at http://www.isitveggie.com/

Hope this helps
