Quick update - went to my local 99p store and bought some of the soya milk - 2 for 99p, great!
On it's own it was quite creamy and sweet but I made DH a coffee using the milk and he asked if I had put Baileys in his coffee - I tried it and it smelled and tasted like I had added something to it we were not sure we liked it! Quite strange really but really nice with cereal!!May GC 433.32/ 350  Apr GC 263.43 /300

Ok, need some serious help here - desperately want to go back to veganism but although I got used to non-sweetened soya milk before, I never much enjoyed it. Has anything really changed over the last 2 years?
Am not going back to spreads either, any good solid non-plasticised vegan fats for baking?
And quinoa aside, any recommendations for calcium and iron that I can eat in small quantities?
Btw I lost lots of weight fast as a vegan (unintentionally!) because I concentrated on cooking vegetable dishes, but disliked soya milk so much, this cut cereal consumption out.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Nut milks are quite common in supermarkets now - you might like some of these.

You can let olive oil set to become spreadable in the fridge (learned on here). I use a mild vegetable oil in cakes, and you can use it for pastry. Some thing do need the harder fats to se, like flapjacks for example. I have no problem using non-hydrogenated spreads but coconut oil would probably work, though more expensive, I you have something against them.

Figs. Only need about 3 per day for RDA calcium (would check that though, I don't have time to research this morning.) Iron you are looking at soya, beans, chick peas, lentils. Oats are good. Dried fruit. Wholegrains and green vegetables. It is more a case of adding up what you eat throughout the day rather than one food item sky-rocketing up the iron chart iyswim?

I don't particularly use soya milk just to drink (though the kids do). If you want cereal without milk, how about something that doesn't need milk like rice cakes, oatcakes, or cereal bars? Healthy fats added to vegetable dishes drizzle of oil on top of tagine, soup etc), plenty of nuts and peanut butter, protein is bulky in the form of pulses, fruit, rice and pasta are all calories that add up in a balanced diet.Love and compassion to all x0 -

Soya milk doesn't really have any taste to me, I use the light Alpro one but you could try oat or rice milk instead?
Vitalite is now vegan I think but I'm not sure if it is any good for baking.0 -

Yes it is. I find Vitalite great for replacing butter if needed instead of oil, like in flapjacks or light crisp pastry.Love and compassion to all x0 -

I have eventually got used to soya milk in tea and coffee as nothing else seems to work really for me but for drinking I love KOKO coconut "milk". Reasonable price and I think most supermarkets have it with the UHT milks. Doesn't really taste much of coconut and I find it really refreshing. I also like oat and rice milks but I think you have to try them for different things to know what they work best for - all are great for drinking and cereal though!May GC 433.32/ 350  Apr GC 263.43 /300

Thanks for the 'heads up' on this. Stopped off on the way home from a hospital appointment and got 1 box each of chocolate and vanilla flavor. They didn't have cappuccino, but still far too good a deal to miss!
Thought I should mention Morrison's seems to have Granovita burger and falafel mix permanently on offer - 2 for £2. While I usually try to make my own, they are good to have in for emergencies or for my teens when they come in from sport and are ravenous! No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0
