pumpkin, what do you usually grow? I am not sure if my attempts at growing will be any good, but i at least want to try it :) I would like to get the boys involved too, bt my 15 year old has no interest. My 10 yr old will help i think.

Peas and beans are really easy (you can plant both now) and are fun to watch grow.

Salad leaves and radishes are super fast, as are herbs. I'd perhaps give your DS a container himself that he can nurture and be proud of. Some plants really like each other (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/organic_companionplanting1.shtml ), so you could plant, say, Nasturtiums (which are edible flowers) and kale together, or marigolds and tomatoes in a big pot.

Would anyone mind if I resurrected this thread? I think it is full of really useful info and tasty recipes.

After enjoying Christmas with my son, who has transitioned from vegetarian to vegan, I have decided to give it a go as well.

    Any other new vegans here?

Vegans can only do their best. It's about not intentionally causing harm or suffering to animals. We're not Jains.

  • Hi I am attempting veganuary! I am coming into this after going veggy a year ago. I am looking at doing a big monthly shop of essentials online when my student money comes in. So far I have added to my virtual basket:
    Big bag of pasta
    Rice
    tins of tomatoes
    lentils
    frozen onions
    frozen stir fry veg
    veg stock cubes
    curry paste
    butter beans
    refriend beans
    frozen veg mince
    2 nut roasts
    frozen chips
    frozen peppers
    chickpeas
    bread
    linda mcartney sausages
    tomato puree
    coconut milk
    uht plant milk
    vegan pesto
    Linda mcartney burgers

I will get fresh veg from Lidl/ Aldi and already have a cupboard full of herbs, spices and condiments. Is there anything I'm missing?

Tahini or peanut butter + lemon juice for turning your tinned pulses into sandwich fillings
