Just to confirm, can you definatly use a Nationwide Cash Card without getting any charges abroad? will they give you the same exchange rate as they would with the Visa Debit Card for drawing cash out?
Thanks0 -

Click the 'more info' link shown below:We do not charge you for using UK cash machines, but the machine provider may make charges over which we have no control. From 1 June 2009 we will pass on a Visa charge for foreign transactions. More info.
Then under 'Questions & Answers', click 'I have a Cash Card Account that I use to withdraw cash when I'm on holiday. Will I be charged?'No. Initially, only Visa debit card transactions will have a fee applied. Your cash card is run by a different provider and is only available for withdrawing cash (it does not have facilities to make purchases online or at retailers). Our Cash Card Account is our Basic Bank Account and is available/suitable for customers who meet the Basic Bank Account criteria.
As the Cash Card is not provided by VISA, the rate may well be different from VISA's rate.0 -
A friend and I both received VISA Debit Cards and cheque books when opening our Flex accounts - neither of us had any savings accounts with Nationwide or had previously had any dealings with them at all.
I opened a Flexaccount and was given a cash card. I asked how long should I wait until applying for a debit card and was told 6 months. After 6 months of paying in £1500 a month I applied for the debit card and was declined. Told to re-apply again in 9 months. Thought better of it and opened a Citibank account with full debit card and closed the Nationwide account.
Now moved over to Barclays as Citibank told me they don't have a internal credit score for customers with no credit with them. Not much use for building a credit score then. :rolleyes:0 -
As an Adviser in a branch it is in our interest to get those who apply for a FlexAccount to get the Visa Debit Card and also a Credit Card. We get points for the more we open so we try very hard to help our customers. If you have a good branch then it is worth sitting down with the Adviser and they will go through the questions with you. The credit score is mandatory, but they also check the electorial register. So, if the form is not filled in correctly with past addresses this will cause a problem. If we are keying the information with you there we can see this will be a problem (if the dates don't tally) and get you to provide the further information. We also check income, so if someone doesn't put any information down for earnings we can ask if they have a pension they haven't considered, or part-time work or any benefits. I do agree that Nationwide are very stringent on their criteria but they are trying to protect themselves from customers who could pose a bad risk. We have noticed over the past few months it is now harder to get a full FlexAccount, also loans and mortgages.0

You will get charged the fee that Visa charge Nationwide - nothing else.0 -
My wife and I have separate bank accounts at Lloyds and Barclays. I have had a Nationwide credit card for about 3 years. We have recently applied (online) for a Nationwide Flex account because we want the debit card for overseas travel. We made it clear that we would not be transferring all our SOs and DDs to that account (ie it would not become our main current account).
We have just been offered the Nationwide Flex account with cheque book, debit card and an overdraft facility of £2250. Having read of some of the problems people have experienced in even getting an account open I was slightly surprised by the level of overdraft offered - as this isn't going to be our main account I was expecting something like £250-£500. I just wondered what other people had experienced.0 -

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to have both a cash card and a debit card on the same Flex account? I already have a visa debit card but also want to have a cash card as I believe you do not get charged 1% when on ATM withdrawals outside of the EU like you do with the visa debit card.
Many thanks in advance.0 -
how long is nationwide ttaking at the moment for these accounts to be fully opened and cards issued etc.
i am an existing nationwide customer (credit card) and applied online via the internet banking i have for the credit card, though i selected that it was not going to be the main account and neither was i opening anything else, they accepted me and have advised i can get a cheque book and debit card. on the end of the process after this it advised that it needed a signature? and a form would be sent in the post
does any one know how long they take to send it, also am a bit concerned now as when i log on the internet banking and look at the account application screen it shows that it is approved but awaiting signature/identification?
so any experience from others on this - would it just be a signature they are waiting for or will i have to send additional ID as well, and if they want id to prove who i am, how could they already confirm that i was approved for the account and can get the debit card etc???MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0
