Nationwide is the ONLY bank account in UK that does not charge anything when using card aboard...

Anyone know if Nationwide basic Flex cash account are able to take advantage of free cash withdrawals aboard?

    Hi Noah,

It was pointed out to me on this forum that you can withdraw with the cash card abroad without any fees etc. I have tested it since, and it does work!

I have now a cash card and two (don't ask!) visa cards with NW flexaccounts. The cash card withdrawals always show immediately, the debit card withdrawals take a couple of days to process. The cash card goes via Cirrus I think the debit card via VISA, but both don't charge and just give you the rate for the moment of processing.

    Hi Sam37

Thanks for this, yes i know it is possible to have a flex account using a cash card like myself ( i don't know why i have not given a visa debit) to withdrawn cash aboard without fees, but does this also apply for those who have a basic account...i think it is called flex cash account.

Nationwide have three different bank accounts:

Flex account with visa debit card - FREE withdrawals/purchases aboard
Flex account with cash card - FREE cash withdrawals
Basic account: Flex cash account with cash card - ???

They don't charge for any card use abroad on any account.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Used to called a basic flexaccount. Now it's just called a cash account.

No, it just a Flex account with a cash card instead of a Visa debit.

    Your advisor is right.

Does the credit scoring results determine whether i get a cash card or debit card for flex account? I don't understand why i got a cash card - I have good credit history with no missed payments on active accounts and several late markers on settled accounts which are over 4 years old. NO CCJs, defaults etc.
I hear in order to have a visa debt card with nationwide, credit history had to be spotless? i.e series of green o's and no adverse data at all??
  • I think there is an inbetween account which is an account with cash card and chequebook which is what I have (not sure if you can still open this though- its what they gave me when i was 16)
