Wow, what a difference, that's amazing! I went to the garden centre at lunch time but they didn't have any seed potatoe's so I'm going to attempt to use some from the supermarket! I don't want to wait until next year!
Does anyone know of a website that has a calendar on it showing what we should be doing in our veggie gardens by month? I think this would be really useful and make sure that I don't miss out on planting certain things. I need to be organised!0 -

MSE, of course.
I'm sure there are more, but this is the one I found.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

I have this one and it is very detailed, so it can help a lot for us all
My garden is going well, although the cats are still trying their hardest to stop me growing anything else, as every time i sow more seeds they dig them up, no matter what protection i put down, and the worst culprit is my cat!!!
Well we have eaten loads of strawberries and potatoes, i will need to dig up my main pots soon as they are flowering, then i was hoping to grow one more crop, so will have to sort out which ones will be good.
My tomatoes are going well, although only lots of flowers at the moment
I love my garden so much and my friends have all thought about growing their own since seeing it :T
My Oh loves the idea of us being almost self sufficient in veg this summer :j I just need to know when to harvest my shallots and garlic????
I hope the sun is shining on everyone today

by coincidence i was looking at this over the weekend....
i believe it is when the shoots start to brown/yellow off
same with onions,
then there is something about letting them hang for a while....
which im sure someone can confirmsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Autumn planted garlic should be ready to lift within the next few weeks. The leaves will start to flop over on their own. Same thing with shallots and onions, depending when they went into the ground. If any of the above were spring planted, it'll prob be closer to august before they're ready to come up, at a decent size.
Well done everyone for getting stuck in. Happy harvest :beer:0 -
Thanks guys, I have harvested one bunch of shallots as they look like onions!! they are huge, they are hanging in my understairs cupboard as it is dark and cool. I will wait for the others until they start to yellow and wilt. Thanks again

then there is something about letting them hang for a while....
Take a look at my onion pic, I twist garden twine around my onions/garlic/shallots and hang them on the shed door. The shed is in the shade and it's airy so they dry out lovely and last for months, I only used the last of last year's a few weeks agoDebt busting! Jan 2014 £7632.50 £7445.80

am i right in thinking that you dont have to hang them up but can eat them straight away?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Yes, you can eat straight away ... hanging & drying are for those that will need to be stored. Any that have developed thick necks should be used up first as they won't store well.Winter sown onions don't tend to store as well as spring sown ... they just fill the gap before the spring sown are ready for lifting.:beer:0

thinking ahead now......
when is the right time to sow winter onions? sept/oct?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....
