If you're sowing them from seed do so around August. If you're planning to grow from sets, they usually go in the ground oct/nov .... same time as garlic if you're doing some.

  • Hi everyone, been ages since I have been on here, much same as everyone else have been very busy in garden in my odd tiny bit of spare time. Everything still going mad, have had lots of strawberries and kids fight over who is going to eat them which I suppose is good in some respects!! Have a couple of questions though.. my cucumbers in potting shed are beginning to look like something out of a horroe movie,, naively I didnt realise how big they got for some reason!! Anyway, they are beginning to flower and I seem to remember vaguely reading something about pollination.. do I have to do anything with the flowers and a paintbrush?? Also same for tomatoes in potting shed as presumably bees dont get in there to do anything? Sorry if its a daft question. Peppers also getting huge with tiny buds and I should be able to pick a few mange tout tomorrow I hope, Potatoes beginning to flower and everything else also doing all the right things :)

Hi everyone - isn't this weather just fantastic, that's why I've not been on for a while - too busy in the Garden, watering in the morning and watering in the evening - we are just outside London here in North Kent so weather has been scorching - the Plants are thriving and loving it.;)

I'm now reaping the rewards and loving everything we've eaten so far, had loads of Rocket, Salad leaves, spinach which we've enjoyed. Only had a few peas, this was my first year growing these and didn't grow enough so a lesson learned there for next year, also picked my first Courgettes, have grown these for a few years now so knew how many I wanted, have made Courgette Muffins with some, using a couple tonight in a Frittata and still got loads to grow so shall be picking those for a while yet.

Dug up my Salad potatoes which were delicious, like nothing we've ever bought in a Supermarket, again this was my first year growing those although I have grown Main crop before, shall grow more Salad potatoes next year as we have nearly used them all.

Tomatoes all have plenty of flowers on them as do my runner beans and everything else looking good so fingers crossed.

    Happy Gardening everyone.:D

had carrots, beetroot, spinach, potatoes, turnips, swede
    so far.....

just cut first cabbage.... found i had 4 smaller ones smothered by its leaves....

decided i wont grow some items next year as dont eat them... ie radish

thought potatoes grown in ground would be better than pots, epsecially as the leaves on the pots didnt look as healthy..... got a builders bucket full

tommies got flowers everywhere... just transplanted lettuce seedlings,
peas now starting to sprout pods throught the middle of the flowers....

watering is a bind but a definate todo job......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

    hi
im very excited and wanted to share my news, my brocoli plants have tiny brocolis on them! im very excited! Maybe im too easily pleased!

How do i know when my peas are ready for eating? Ive got loads of pods but only a couple of flowers?! I did expect more flowers but i have never sucessfully grown anything before so really dont know!

What seeds should I plant now for something growing during winter?
  • Hiya, if anyone is growing sweetcorn minor for the first time (like I am) and got very excited when they saw the silky strands (like I did a week ago), it's time to pick'em if you want the corn to stay small and dainty and the plant to produce more cobs. If not the corn become the 'normal' type and the plant doesn't produce anymore cobs (about 4 per plant). Hoping I wasn't too late picking mine. Oh well that gardening - there's always next year.
    Trying to be good :A
