Well the Garden has had another good watering overnight and it's still raining now, at least at the moment it means I only have to water what's in the Greenhouse.:p

Have flowers appearing on my Courgettes, tomatoes and looks like I may be picking some peas this weekend. Been getting plenty of Rocket and should be able to cut my first lettuce at the weekend. Planted out some more Radish seeds yesterday and another lot of lettuces ready for a few weeks time. Apples appeared on my tree, my peppers, chillies, cabbages and runner beans looking healthy, all in all I'm quite pleased.

My Broad Beans have been attacked by Blackfly, have sprayed them and I'm hoping they will pull through. Never grown them before so not sure.

Can't remember who was asking about recipes for Spinach, I've been cutting Spinach Beet for a couple of weeks now, either just have it steamed with some melted butter or last night I made a Curry and to accompany it we had some spicy potatoes with some shredded Spinach Beet wilted into them, very tasty it was too.;)

    Good luck to everyone.:D

    Hi all,

Newbie gardener here. I started a few months ago, I have potatoes in bags, some tomatoes and some strawberrys.

    Potatoes and strawberrys seem ok.

I grew tomatoes from seed, they are in pots/growbags now ut only 4-5" tall. Did I plant them too late? What I mean is will summer finish before the tomatoes are grown? When will they be done?

What can I plant today? Is it too late to plant anything? Onions, Garlic, Cucumbers etc. I will be growing in gro bags but also have a little plastic greenhouse for seeds.

    Any help apreaciated.
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

Hi i'm a newbie myself but will help where I can, but i'm sure someoe will be along with better advice than mine, Now the weather is warming up your tomatos should put on a growth spurt, mine recently have done and you should get a few tomatos this year. \cucumbers its a little late to plant from seed but you should be able to get a small plant, from a nursery or market somewhere, I bought one 2 weeks ago from a car boot and it has tripled in size already. Its to late for garlic and onions but you should be able to plant some this autumn to get a crop next year. I seem to remember reading about others overwintering garlic and onions.

Bestyman - if you've got some spare space available it's certainly not too late to plant lettuce seedlings or to sow lettuce seeds, but if sowing lettuce seeds, be aware they may not germinate if sown in really hot weather as the seeds will get baked to death. Best to sow the seeds in some trays and keep in a shadier area away from slugs until they're strong enough to survive transplanting. You have probably planted out your tomatoes a little late but if we have a really good summer and you can grow them in a spot which gets sunshine for as long as possible during the day you might get a reasonable late crop. You might want to think about supplementing them with one or two more mature plants from a garden centre to hedge your bets.
  • Hi

I've just got into growing veg, not harvested anything yet but hopeful of at least one edible tomato by the end of the summer!

I've also planted pepper plants (not holding out much hope for these), purple sprouting, rocket and onions.

I'm keen to keep the enthusiasm going, is it too late to plant potatos? I'd really love to give this a go. what else could I plant out. Is there a diary for what I should be doing each month?

Any ideas and suggestions would be greatfully recieved.
    thanks

I went to B & Q and bought quite a few seeds that can still be planted now: carrots, parsnips, spring onions, turnips & beetroot. Got any tubs? ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Well I finally have some more pictures of the garden here. Just been looking back to the first ones I put on and can't believe the difference.

This is the garden as it looks now, it was a little busier a couple of weeks ago but the winter onions were ready to come out.

And these are the onions that came out hung on the shed door

The lettuce in the carrot bed!! (carrots didn't work)

and some freshly washed for tonight's tea

    Sprouts http://i716.photobucket.com/albums/ww162/mrsvela_2009/007.jpg

    Peas http://i716.photobucket.com/albums/ww162/mrsvela_2009/006.jpg

My third lot of potatoes so far and still plenty of pots still growing

The first passion flower this year

There's no wonder the winter is so depressing looking back at how bare the garden was. I don't think I've ever fully appreciated the difference until I photographed it.

The beds that the winter onions came out of now have broccoli and swede planted in them, plus there's about 50 more onions which should be ready august/september.
