in a square foot you could have 2 rows of onions 3 inches apart and a row of garlic in the middle

the cabbages i have 5 in a square foot - not sure how big they will get before i have to remove some (to eat of course)

carrots/parsnip/turnip/swede could be done in a large pot

my veg plot is split into foot squares.....

thanks robyne, I may have to give some of that a try esp onions and garlic, but I use so much of both I think I'd have to buy a field to keep me supplied :)

Hi guys, it has gone quiet on here again!
Oh well, I have done some gardening today, I have planted out my courgette plants, spinach, peas and climbing beans, i have also potted out my sunflower and sweetpeas. The weather is great here today, really sunny but really quite windy, apparently gales are forecast for tomorrow, so i am glad i got my stuff out.

My garlic is just huge and shallots are going crazy, i can't wait to harvest some soon :) I had some of our radishes at the weekend, our first produce to eat! All because they needed thinning :) They were very tasty, haven't had a radish in years :)

Well i hope everyone elses gardens are flourishing? Enjoy :)

Hope you don't mind me joining in on this one...

It's my first year of growing bits and pieces mainly in pots and I must say that I am really enjoying it, it's amazing how much compost you go through in such a small place!

Amongst other things I have got some banana shallots on the go and they appear to be splitting off nicely, question is how long do I leave them in the ground for and when will I know to pick them?

    Hi All,

I planted out my summer cabbages at the weekend, my lettuce, salads, rocket and spinach are all coming along nicely and my sugar snap peas and mange tout that I put straight in the garden have started to come up :) My strawberries also have flowers!!! can't wait to actually get something I can eat! Im slowly winning my war against the slugs regarding my runner beans, they look a bit of a mess at the bottom but the tops are really starting to take off!

I have fiveshort rows of onions, three of leeks, two of carrots, one each of Swiss Chard, Curley Kale, beetroot and kohl rabi plus one or two cabbages dotted in odd spaces in the vegetable patch. Down a south facing fence, I have 25 tomato plants under mineral water bottle cloches, and 24 climbing bean seedlings (still waiting to be planted out). Only 2 of my 4 courgettes germinated so they're planted out under cloches and I have two late arrivals just germinating on the lounge window sill. My five peppers and five aubergines are growing nicely in my mini plastic greenhouse and won't go out onto the patio until June. I'm also going to plant parsley in amongst the geraniums in our patio containers. In the front garden my soft fruit bushes and strawberries are doing well but it has been very dry here and I've have to be out watering every day. Am keeping my fingers crossed that everything crops well otherwise a lot of effort will have been wasted.
  • I had my first homegrown strawberry the other day.

    It was great.

Dex, I think robnye is referring to the kind of gardening in this link: http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

Another member on here - ixwood - introduced me to this site and it has helped me no end! I am in my first year of growing anything and now I have the wood for my beds (mine are 8ft - 4ft) I can finally move everything out of my plastic "greenhouse" and into the plot! Give it a try - you can grow so much more in a small place! Good luck!!:D

Well i rushed out this morning to check my peas, beans and sweet peas, as i have had terrible trouble with slugs for the past few years. So they are all FINE:j I did use Organic slug pellets and they appear to have done the trick, i am sooooo excited :j as i have not been able to grow anything like this before as the slugs have always won, i realise that one night is not the full test, but with no nibbles at all i am quite pleased :T. Well the wind is not quite as bad as yesterday, yet:o, lets see what the weather has in store?

I hope you are all going well, it looks like it :T Bring on the harvesting
