have people planted peas and beans straight into the soil?
how many and what distance apart have you planted them?
i have tried 4 times this year, but only have 1 lettuce to show.....
last year i had them growing out my ears there where so many...... oh well, will try some this weekend.
my first tatties have gone flower buds.
2nd batch have just pushed through soil as well.....
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

I've planted mine in compost in tubs, mainly because the ground couldn;t be prepared in time. My neighbour though plants directly in to the soil with great success. The bbc gardening website has lots of advice: http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/htbg/module7/salads_peas_and_beans1.shtml

I have been growing my peas straight in the tubs, only because the veg patch wasn't big enough to accomodate them aswell though lol. My salad leaves etc were all planted direct into the veg patch & seem to be on a mission to take over. I'm not organised enough to have any real logic to my distances etc i just sort of plant & hope for the best lol I'm terrible for that sorry.

I do have a question about the peas aswell though. I'm completly new to growing them & wondered how big they should be when I tie them to the stakes? They are getting bigger & I dont know if I should be doing them now or waiting a little longer.

I stopped planting them direct in soil as either the mice ate them or they rotted. Now I start them off indoors in lenghts of guttering, harden them off in a greenhouse and plant them when about 4 inches tall. Even then its a fight to see whether they can grow past the slugs.

Tried to go fully organic this year but went out this morning and saw runner beans, sweetcorn, courgettes and pumpkins badly mangled by a combination of slugs and high winds. Will be trying the oats method next but part of the problem is that quite a bit of planting is in new beds and thru weed suppressant fabric, so its difficult to control the slugs when youve just made them a five star hotel :(

Peas will normally cling on to pea sticks and netting with their tendrils so there is usually no need to tie them in unless the stakes are too thick for them to cling to. In which case you could tie some netting to the stakes so they can anchor themselves.

    Hi All,

Do you mind if I join,

It's my first year of really growing anything, I grew a few tomato plants last year but that was all.
This year I've grown everything from seed, I have:
    2 mini cucumbers
    2 courgettes
    3 orange peppers
    2 apache chillis
    5 yellow tumbling tomatoes
5 red sweet millionare cherry toms
    Spinach
    Peas
    Sugar Snap Peas
    Mange Tout
    Runner Beans
    Rocket
    Lettuce
    mixed salad
    20 Strawberries - cambridge favourite
    sping onions
    basil
    and 3 types of potatoes

also grown morning glory, sweet peas, lobellia and diascia

The worrying thing is I've just realised how much im doing, so pleased with my little self but hoping it doesn't all go to pot

I am too battling with slugs and snails  I've tried beer traps and although they catch the damn things I think they stop in their way there to have a good munch, so I have bought pellets and they do seem to be doing the trick!

I've got a lot of stuff in pots and things like the cucumber, peppers and chillis are going to stay in the mini greenhouse, all my beans and peas are in the garden with sweet peas planted in with the runner beans to attract bees;)

I have salad in the garden under a big cloche and also in 3 troughs...

All of which reminds me, I must go out there tonight as I have lots of little jobs that need doing

I too have to admit that I have become very sad and the first thing I do everyday when I get home from work is to check the garden :)

    Good Luck All!

my seeds arent doing as well as last year, but i think that may be cos i started late and had tommies/lettuce seedlings every where, so tried to reign it back a little.... oh well. what ive got is coming on..... had some radishes at the weekend....

I don't think I realised until I wrote all that down, now whether it survives and I get any produce is a different story  fingers crossed though :p

well saying that, ive got (only after checking my plan)

    peas
    dwarf beans
    runner beans
    carrots
    swede
    turnip
    parsnip
    spinach
    garlic
    onions
    spring onions
    rocket/lettuce
    tomatos
    rhubard
    2 x potatoes
    cabbage
    broccoli
    cauliflower
    strawberries

most are in a 6ft by 4ft raised bed. which touch wood hasnt been found by the slugs or snails, even the local cats seem to leave it be (mind you they leave mess every else)

nb: i also have a look each day, and noticed how much everything seems to swell after a good soaking with rain.....!

    Wow!

Id love to do onion, garlic, cabbage, root veg and things like that just worried they would take up too much space in the garden.:(
