They have the freedom to seek them out. They also have the freedom to not use MDDs. It is their choice. If, for some reason, they actually CAN'T then I am sure they would have access to some help.

Why do they not have choice? Please give one example.

I agree about people having access to internet at libraries but not all people would feel safe accessing private data eg online bill at library.

Anyhow I'm many thinking of elderly people who are not able to embrace this technology era - for instance my Mum can manage a manual microwave and instant record on VCR but wouldn't use the timer function or use an atm. Luckily I'm around to sort out best deals but not everyone has someone.

This is true. Anyway I thought our wonderful government was going to do something about this? I mean making sure elderly people get the same access to utilities that the rest of do...?
If you will the end, you must will the means.
  • I can see that no one has said anything about the calling features going up in price. 1 calling feature from £1.71 to £2.50 per month. I feel that this is a steep increase but they have not increased there calling features in over 5 years. I think it is great that they are now giving 0845/0870 number in with your calling plan. BT will lose 24 million in revenue from these calls.BT is the first company in the UK to do this. With regards to the line rental going up to £12.50, this is due to the inflation rate & BT has not increased their line rental in over 2 years. If you set up DD & e-billing you would het it for the price of £11.25 which means that it is not a £1 increase. BT is ggod value for money!!!

But aren't most companies actually *reducing* their line rental charges?

I'm alright, Jack. I refuse to pay an extra 0.2p per minute to subsidise vulnerable biddies' line rentals.

If you want fairness and decency, don't look for it on moneysavingexpert.

Any line provider can now do exactly what Ofcom has made BT Retail do, employ Openreach to connect/reconnect a line and charge (or not charge) the end-user accordingly.

Some line providers choose not to do that (some embroidering the truth by saying they are not allowed to and/or only BT can) but the point is they can do so.
Actually, because BT Openreach and BT Retail, are both owned by the same group, it is my opinion that there is an obvious and flawwed conflict of interest. Every company who wishes to use the only national telephone network is at the mercy of the group. We all know how Openreach bow down to BT Retail requests for DSL activations etc, yet "go slow" and delay requests from major competitors such as Sky, just because they tearing BT Retail's customer base to pieces by offering better services at fairer pricing. It certainly would'nt be the first time I have heard of a customer trying to move to a competing ISP and the ISP having problems with BT Openreach enabling the connection for weeks... only for the customer to telephone BT Retail and be advised if they moved to BT, they could have it activated within a few days guaranteed.

Ofcom say a lot of things, and make a lot of comments, but in reality are very slow and do very little to try and keep them both in line.

If Tesco controlled the entire UK food distribution network, and Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Somerfield etc, were all at the mercy of them, with a few select companies like Aldi and Lidl representing Virgin Media, do you think it would be fair to the rest of the industry, and do you think Tesco would not have an interest to make life hard for the rest of the companies to profit?

Personally, I feel the UK telephone network should become state-owned, and then BT can continue to trade as they do through BT Retail, and then there would be little foul play, and considering they want to use public money every time they want to upgrade the network, yet post hundreds millions of pounds worth of profit each and every year, we may as well own it, it would return better value for money than allowing them to use public money to upgrade their network, and then make excessive private profits off the back of public investment.

I don't know if it was mentioned previously, but don't forget Friends and Family is now going to be changed and will be charged on top of the line rental and the benefits of the friends and family will also be changing.
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.

Yes its mentioned in the original post if you read it.;)
  • From 1st April 2009.

Standard line rental price increases to £12.50 a month (from £11.50). (Already posted about).

Discount for Paperfree billing paid by direct debit has also increase from £1.23 to £1.25.

The cost of UK calls made during the daytime increase by 0.59 pence per minute to 4.50 pence per minute.

Call price changing from 3.91 pence per minute to 4.5 pence per minute. An increase of 0.59 pence per minute.

The price of the chargeable Unlimited Evening and Weekend Plan increases from £2.65 to £2.95 per month.

Special offer for those customer that have evening and weekend calls at no extra cost means that this change does not effect them as they credit for the offer will also increase from £2.65 to £2.95 p/m.

The price of the Unlimited Anytime Plan with a 12 month renewable contract will increase by 10p per month on 1 April, from £4.85 per month to £4.95 per month. The full price of this plan (without a contract) will increase from £5.82 to £5.95 on 1 April.

Again, the offer means that cust on the special offer still pay £1 less per month. An increase of 10p ios not bad tbh.

The monthly charge for each individual calling feature is increasing by 79p per month to £2.50 per month.

Price increasing from £1.75 to £2.50 per month.

Friends and Family scheme to Geographical Numbers and one 0845 Number abolished.(New schemes for mobile and intl numbers, chargeable in some cases).

Are friends and family really any use anymore. Sure you can only add local, national and limited mobile numbers to the list. Sure with the inclusive calls within your package, you no longer get the "BIG" benefits from this out of date service.

Plus the minimum call charge went up to 8p on 16/1/2008. (already posted about)

Call set up fee increase to 8p. Again if you are making calls within your package, this does not apply. If you are making alot of calls outside your package, your on the wrong package tbh.
