probably a stupid question, but i don't know the answer. Is it depend on the income. our combined income between both us is just over £55,000.

    will we still qualify?

Just a quick question - I didn't start work until June 2003 so that means I can't claim right?
Before that I was claiming as a single parent.
  • Unfortunately not wendywitch, you needed to have been working & earning over £6000 PA in the tax year ending April 2003.

I applied for this just before Xmas and as far as I knew, was entitled to the £1, 047 amount....got cheque this morning for £222.07. I called my local office and he said Childrens Tax Credit was actually a tax relief and the money we are getting/ applying for now, is the extra tax we paid.

Im still writing to query the amount though.

Were you a higher rate taxpayer in that year?

If you were a higher rate taxpayer in that year, for every 3 pound taxed at higher rate the allowance was reduced by 2 pounds.

This may be why you didn't receive the full amount.

wel i rang and apparently OH was issued a 702H tax code but the employer at the time did not use it! So in goes the claim. Thankyou for the heads up.

If the 702H code was issued but not used by the employer then the pay and tax would not have balanced at the end of that year and your husband should have got a tax rebate from HMRC.

  • Its interesting to note that if a married couple were getting the Married Couples Allowance they would not get the Children's Tax Credit as well.

According to an IR leaflet I have : "....you cannot claim both Married Couples Allowance AND CTC. If you are entitled to receive Married Couples Allowance you will automatically get that allowance. To receive CTC you will need to elect for that allowance...."

I think the Married Couples Allowance was slightly more than CTC at £546.50

Hope this is useful to somebody...Does anyone know any different ?

My Tax Code for 2002/2003 was 665H so Ive already had it.

    Probably a really silly question...

I have downloaded and printed off the forms to fill out but it doesn't have anywhere to put my Husbands Details, NI etc....!!!

    Help please....
  • It's been mentioned earlier in this thread or in one of the other ones about this subject. Just add them on the top, or wherever you can fit them, just as well you noticed.

    Thanks chrissyan...

I looked and looked but couldn't see it posted anywhere ... Think I was going into a blind panic to be honest :rotfl:...

Have seen it now and forms all completed ready to be handed in tomorrow in person, not sure if can claim it but Hubby's Tax code is different from that stated and as far as I am aware we have never claimed CTC...

    Will now wait and see...

  • My partner has a son born 1987 who lived with us 50% of the time during that year and with his mother (my partners ex) 50% the time. We had a bedroom for him at our house 3 days a week.

We think she was on state benefits at the time so can my partner fill in the form to claim? They don't speak to each other and don't have her national insurance number so what's the best to do?

My partner was full time employed and still is. We have no children of our own and I am full time employed too.
