I'm almost hoping I get that letter. Much better to have already had it than not claimed in time.

The allowance was usually given to the highest earning parent but the amount was reduced for higher rate tax payers (those earning £34,615 at the time). You may still be eligible if you were a higher rate tax payer though, depending on your income

    My letter says

"I have looked at your records and can tell you that due to the level of your income in the year (i.e. you were due to pay tax at the higher rate 40%) no childrens tax credit is due"

I thought there was a sliding scale of refund above 40% threshold, wording of letter : paid 40% = get nothing

I would have been about 4k over threshold at the time, I thought the payout was going to be reduced by something like £15 per 1k over

The letter is wrong, but this is the sliding scale:

"The credit is gradually withdrawn from higher-rate taxpayers, who lose £1 of tax credit for every £15 of income above the point at which they start to pay tax at the higher rate, until their entitlement is exhausted."
  • You might want to check the sliding scale.

I was under the impression for every £3 you paid at higher rate the relief was reduced by a £1.
