I posted my claim off at the end of January, an today recieved my letter. I opened it excitedly hoping that a cheque was about to appear..... My disappointment came rather too quickly.

I have looked at your records and can tell you that due to the level of your income in the year (ie. you were due to pay tax at the higher rate 40%) no Children's Tax Credit is due to you.

My son was born 1995, i am a single parent and have remained so. My income for that year was approx £13,000 (salary). I do not understand how i should have been classed as paying the higher rate of 40%, i have checked with the inland revenue without discussing this letter and they advised me that i would have had to have earned £29,400 to be placed into this band.

I am not sure whether i should write to them asking them to explain their decision or whether i dare try and call the office on the letter.

Anyone else have the same situation and if so what was your outcome?

Any help will be gladly received, many thanks Nic

Obviously a mistake,I suggest you dig out any paperwork you had from 2002/2003 preferably a P60. If you can't find find it, see if your employer at the time can provide you with a statement of earnings. Then make an appointment with your local tax office over the phone & take it in.

rung my local tax office yesterday as I still hadn't heard anything and I sent my form in December and a lovely lady told me that the I was one of the lucky ones and a payment had been authorised yesterday and I should receive it in the next 7 - 10 days but she couldn't tell me for how much.

Grrrrr, still battling with Bootle. Today I phoned up the 'helpline' to query yet another erroneous letter sent to me.

'We have sent you some further information in the post' she said.
'Great, what does it say' I replied
'I can't tell you because of our data confidentiality rules ' she replied
    'Can't you give me a clue? ' I asked
    'No'

I am not normally lost for words on the phone, but that takes the biscuit. And that after her asking me at least 6 questions to confirm my identity !!!!

I got a letter today saying
"A claim for the children's tax credit has already been made and given for 2002-03 to your partner and therefore no further relief is due".

I wonder if there is anyway to check that it has actually been paid - whether this would be a lump sum, or added to the monthly amount? Any ideas?
