So thats six 21 milers in successive weeks and they are certainly getting more comfortable!:D
Usually you would expect a couple of ebbs and flows of muscle fatigue during runs of this length but not this evening, it was a nice rolling tempo run all the way and I really felt as though I could have kicked on after the 21 miles.....so the benefits are really starting to show through now.

Okay so I've got annoyed about RFL being women only and emailed the equalities commission to see what they think about it -we'll see what they say
I don't know why it is a problem to have a women-only race tbh, especially as it isn't aimed at being competitive but to raise money for charity. The fact that it is women-only gives it a certain character, such as the aerobic warm-up at the start. The goody-bags can be aimed at women, and lets face it, where else do you get a goody bag for a 5k? Don't forget that this is billed as run/walk and was originally started off to encourage women to do something to raise money for women's cancers. That has now been broadened to cover all cancers but I know many women would have been intimidated if men had been running as well. It has grown so much over the last few years compared to when it started.
By the way, in relation to the equalities commission, I saw a race advertised for men-only recently. Check out this link: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/runformoore/ I think it is great that men can get together, have a male-themed race in memory of a famous footballer and raise money for a cancer charity at the same time.
There are so many other gender-related inequalities to get excited about and I don't think that there is much to gain from having a moan about Race for Life.Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

Hiya Chick, where've you been? Hope your marathon recovery is just about complete now!:D
In terms of the RFLs I wouldn't be too concerned, I'm sure they will continue in their current form for a long time to come mainly because, as you say, there are many other things which are far more important.
However, it is clear from earlier discussions that the 'women only' aspect of these events does indeed annoy quite a few people. In relation to the specific points you raise:
It isn't aimed at being competitive - Why does this justify 'women only'?
But to raise money for charity - Why does this justify 'women only'?
Aerobic warm-up at the start - Why does this justify 'women only'?
Don't forget that this is billed as run/walk - Why does this justify 'women only'?
To raise money for women's cancers - Why does this justify 'women only'?
I know many women would have been intimidated if men had been running as well - to suggest that the mere presence of we cuddlable, lovable men is intimidating is, well, not very nice really! And as I think Sammy pointed out, anyone stating that they wouldn't take part in an event unless it was only for their own gender is rather sad!
I saw a race advertised for men-only recently. Check out this link: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/runformoore/ I think it is great that men can get together, have a male-themed race in memory of a famous footballer and raise money for a cancer charity at the same time. - Why is this great? I wouldn't mind betting that there wasn't a solitary male who requested such a 'men only' event to be set up. Far more likely is that this was a rather clumsy attempt to offer a sop to deflect some of the criticism over the RFLs being women only.
The whole point is that these are non-competitive, non-athletic events set up with the sole intention of raising money for specific cancer charities. Why not leave it at that? Why shouldn't men who want to start exercising in a 'non-competitive' atmosphere be allowed to join in? Why shouldn't men who have a specific desire to raise money for the same causes be allowed to join in?
This is never going to be a huge issue but I am kind of irritated on behalf of the men who would like to take part, including the OHs and young sons of those women that do take part, in the same way that I am irritated on behalf of single fathers who are excluded from 'mother's and toddlers' groups either explicitly or subtly because the 'sisterhood' see it as their territory.
Now if we were talking about nude aerobics sessions I could see a justification for a 'women only' ruling (if somewhat disappointing:p) but there is really nothing about the RFLs that justify it.
Anyway, back to running issues..........:D:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Morning people.
Had an excercise free weekend so im ready to go again. I also managed not to over eat. My garmin has been dispatched :j and oh says I can have it early! That manchester park run isnt to far from me although it might be tough to do as i could only do it every other week and i have the kids then which would mean asking the ohto look after them for the duration of the run which isnt to bad but then try getting a 5yr old to rush getting ready in a morning
Rachel021967 I feel I am qualified to comment on the couch to 5k program as I am one of the few people that has done it from the thread and still runs. My advice is to plot yourself a course out on something like mapmyrun and run till you feel you need to stop then walk the rest of the way (walk fast! no strolling :rotfl:). You would be less likely to get injured and you would be able to see your progress(dont forget we all have bad days (except rich ofc:rotfl:)):staradmin5k - 00:27:46:staradmin 10k - 00:57.03:staradminHalf - 02:01:15:staradmin5M - 00:44:07:staradmin0 -

Thanks everyone for thier nice comments.
I never got running this weekend so I am a wee bit disappointed in that!!
Does anyone on this thread take alcohol? I would normally take 6-7 cans of beer either a friday or saturday night depends what night I work. Although I enjoy this I want to give it up as I want to concentrate more on my running does anyone have any advice? Its not that I will give up alcohol totally I will still go out etc but i usually go out once every 2-3 months!!0 -
Hi everyone
I think the Race for Life started as raising money for womens cancers hence the women only running, but I think it's more generic now. I don't think the goodie bag was that good this year and the £12.99 entrance would be OK if most of it was going to research. I have liked the run because the atmosphere has always been good, but when you think that my 10km on 21st June is £8 and I'll get a t-shirt and there's other prizes on offer it seems a bit strange that it costs so much to organise. It's held along the beach so no route to set up. I also think that they could save money by not sending out all the mailings so regularly, it would be cheaper to email. That's my tuppence worth:D
In other news, I completed my longest run to date on Saturday - a comfortable 6.18 miles. I was very chuffed! Just doing Pilates today as need a rest.0 -

Well done on a new milestone, evab....I'm sure you'll be able to hang on for that extra 0.03 miles on the 21st!:p
You're right about the entry fees for the RFL. I've run 3 races at around RFL distance in the last 10 days and the total cost for all three races combined was......£3!!!!
It never ceases to amaze me how so many people are willing to stump up £12.99 to walk or run 5K around a public park, which they can do anyway free of charge. I'm sure that a lot of the participants don't actually realise that none of this money is going to research....just to help fund the lavish lifestyle of the guy who is quite happy to take £250,000 pa from the proceeds plus the other 200 who take £60,000 plus from the proceeds and the other 3,800 who are obviously invaluable in sending out all those packs/newsletters.
Personally, I dont know how someone can take £250,000, and presumably drive around in a rather luxurious car, while overseeing an organisation which tugs at heartstrings to tease out donations of 50p or £5, knowing that thousands upon thousands of these donations are going directly into your own personal bank account. Maybe its just me?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
