I've not been out for a run now for over a week and it's the Great North Run in 14 weeks time :eek: I got the keys to my new house 2 weekends ago and with work, the house and then being in Edinburgh last weekend I've done nothing! So I'm off the wine tonight and WILL go for a jog tomorrow - although I know it will be hard. Am now debating whether to do it on the treadmill in the gym or outside on my own! OH is running tomorrow outside but I can't keep up with him or do the distance he'll be doingGood wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.0

Congrats on your race Rachel - keep the faith on the running as it does come together in the end. Perhaps try setting some small goals so when you get to where you managed last time that you will run to the next corner/block/shop or whatever is appropriate and challenge yourself that way. Those seemingly small extra distances will after a few runs translate into another half or mile etc. Sometimes it is as much about your brain convincing your body to continue as it is about the legs/lungs truly being unable to continue.

Thanks krider. I'm very tempted by the run/walk programs because they layout exactly what you should be doing on a set day and you can see the progress made as you read down the table. I suppose I could make up my own program on run as far as you can principle.0

Hi Rachel
(Don't want to get "too big for my boots" giving advice, cos I'm still a newbie on here!)
My OH did a triathlon a few years ago, then gave up smoking before we had our first baby. He piled on about 3-4 STONE! Then decided he needed a goal and was going to train for another TRI.
However, he's a swimmer trying to run, not a runner trying (or should that be TRI-ing) to swim - so started the run/walk programme.
He's still not a natural runner, but fair play to him, he's stuck at it and does 3/4miles 2-3 times a week (along with cycling and swimming).
He says he still walks a bit, but said it's definately getting easier.
So, in a long-winded way - I'd say "Go For It - You'll soon be running non-stop!!!"Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement! Have to say though, I did wimp out this morning - DD kept me up all night, so decided to stay in bed

If you really want to do it check out the coach to 5k running thread on the beauty boards - but I will say I think only one or two of them have ever finished the program (its 8 weeks I think) and I can only think of one over there who I would call a runner now (sorry guys)
The point is run/walk isnt the best preparation for running any distance because your body doesnt build up enough staminia - I know you think you're not progressing but you most likely are, it doesnt happen overnight - it took me three months to get to running 3 miles and I thought of myself as fit before that :eek:
Can you get a distance that is fixed and run as much of it as you can every day and then walk the rest? I did my commute to work so I had no choice but to do it
Just some thoughts anyway, but everyone's different so maybe run/walk/run would work for you...0 -
I was going to post something similar Becky.
rachel you know that you can brisk/power walk 5K so have you thought about mapping a route of the same distance on Mapmyrun. You could start by walking briskly to the half way point and then running as far as you can manage (s l o w l y) then walking the rest of the way back. This way you can build up the running until you can run all the way back (which will probably be sooner than you think) and then you can gradually reduce the amount you walk at the start. Going back to the various discussions around the attempts to drive competitiveness out of running and the strange assumption that somehow female=uncompetitive, I had to have a wry smile on Wednesday evening at the Spencers Arms Dash.
At the start there were two young girls, probably around 18ish, all smiley and clearly looking forward to the event. It was good to see because these races tend to be exclusively full of experienced runners who have a few years of running under their belt.
Anyway, at the finish there they were still looking all smiley as though they'd really enjoyed it. I wondered whether they'd actually done the race to be honest because they looked fresh and composed, only to find out they had finished 3rd and 7th!!
Now this is a tough race, a lung busting hilly race, and they had averaged sub 6 minute miling, which trust me is no mean feat.
