Afternoon everyone!
Have to say rupe, I agree. I know "muscle weighs more than fat", but it is disheartening.
I think it's a common compliant, mainly I suppose because you do feel hungrier, so eat more. Think I read an article about what to eat on Runner's World website, but I'm sure peeps on here will have just as much advice.
I did my 4.56m route this morning in torrents of rain (what a difference a week makes!). To think last week I considered investing in a pair of sunglasses - this week I could have done with one of those comedy hat-umbrellas!
Found it heavy going but managed 45mins, so not bad for me.
Have a good saturday everyone!, Mac0 -
Krider - You're almost a text book example of how to train properly and simultaneously keep injury risk to a minimum. Great stuff - keep it going and you will reap the rewards!:D
Rupe - Why worry? I mean seriously, what's the issue? Running is not the exercise to take up to lose weight as we've said many times because it implies a target weight after which effort will drop off and weight will pile back on - a pointless yo-yo exercise!
You may put weight on but you wont get 'fatter' because of the lean muscle mass starting to increase. Your appetite is telling you what it wants for proper nutrition - feed it and let it do its stuff! Remember people get fat because they pretty much disable their appetite by doing too little exercise. But your appetite is your friend - it does away with the need to do all the research about what you should eat and in what quantities, you've got a whole army of little nutrionists working tirelessly solely on your behalf.:D
So ignore the weight, it is totally irrelevant - just rest comfortably in the fact that you cant run for a few years and not end up with a runner's body so just let nature take it's course.
MacGirl - Good for you, many people would have wimped out today. Having said that, rainy runs are often some of the most enjoyable once you get going. You may get the chance to wear sunglasses one day.:pGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Olympic Marathon in Bradford?
Bradford doesn't have much going for it it has to be said but I'm starting to get the impression that Bradford City Council are one of the few councils who are starting to get a renewed enthusiasm for road running.
Its difficult to get road events going without council support because of road closures etc.
Having run in the Bradford 10K at the end of March it has to be said it was a very well organised event and a great course. It now appears that it was the first stage in getting a marathon reintroduced in the city after many years without one, and at a time when virtually every other city marathon has closed down.
But this will be a unique marathon in that it is to be designed around the Olympic logo, ie to be run over 5 loops with each loop coming back to the city centre - its such an obvious design its surprising that nobody has thought of it before!
As a further trial they are running a 10 mile race in October this year incorporating the first 2 loops and then introducing the full marathon (plus 5 and 10 mile road races) in Oct 2010.
I can see that course design catching on.
And even more good news on the provincial marathon front - considering that I have a t-shirt saying that I ran the last ever Blackpool Marathon in April it is great to see that entries have just opened for the 2010 event on 11th April 2010 - I'll be doing it if not in London!:D
Another innovation set to start in 2010 which I can see getting enthusiatic support is the Kilomathon, which will be a run over a distance of 26.2 km, or 16.3 miles. This is an ideal distance because it is a tough test but doesn't bring the wall into play so can be raced hard if so wished, should be popular. The first use of the distance will be a series of 4 races in 2010 - one in each of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks simply and rich, it is much appreciated - though I don't need a textbook - I have this thread :T
rupe, muscle does weigh more than fat, and a leaner body is a healthier body, as rich has already said. But also we often underestimate the calories we consume. By implication we therefore often underestimate the extra calories we consume and running only burns circa 100 calories per mile (individual variations will occur). It is in no way a comment on your diet, but be sure the extra you are consuming is appropriate to what you are burning and let nature run its course via appetite (and all that good stuff rich just said).
That said I've just had some Kendal Mint Cake cos I was flagging quite a lot after earlier and then going out! But only a little bit...0 -
Thanks for the advice/comments all! Am going to pay a bit more attention to what I'm eating - but also do need to loosen up a bit on the weight front. (Lost a serious amount of weight over the last three years - happy now, but always a little nervous that it will pile back on again).Onward and upward - with the odd step to the side

Well I done my first 5km race. I can't run that far but I brisked/power walked it in 36mins 40 seconds. I would of loved to have run it but I'm pleased with my time. I know its against the advice of the forum but I am very tempted to try and run/walk as I'm not getting very far with my running.0
