last night I decided to take the plunge and leave the comfort of the gymn teadmill - yes I actually ventured outside! Had been putting it off really, but it actually went ok. Ran round the fields surrounding our local sports centre - lots of ups and downs, uneven ground etc. Even managed to swallow a fly - so clearly major hurdle overcome.

Baby steps - but am quite chuffed:cool:
Onward and upward - with the odd step to the side

  • Hi people

6m yesterday felt much better than previous one. Did 3m on tuesday in the heat had to stop on that first lap as i was dying because i thought it was cooler than it actually was. only got 2 more weeks training before the race so im going to have to knuckle down. Cant run for the next three days because I have my kids so it will be cross training via a dvd for the next two nights. On a positive the oh ordered my 405 last night :-)

6 miles this morning....58.07 :j:j:j:j Am very happy I think I might have my running legs back :D

I won't disclose my heart rate though as it was literally jumping out my chest..Rich how on earth do you have a HR in the 60's running at 8 min miles! (well apart from the fact you are super fit and are literally dead when resting ;))

It looks like you're just about at 60 minute 10K fitness, Sally! And that's in training, so maybe a little more to come.... so thats good news.:D

However, and you know this anyway, from your description of the heart rate it looks like you are doing hard runs, ie this one and the intervals the other day, without doing the bedrock of volume mileage. That is unless you're not posting other steady runs of course.

But be careful, this is the way to get seriously injured by overstraining tendons and in some cases even snapping them. Please dont do speedwork without the foundation of steady mileage to underpin it!

I was with a guy on Wednesday night who was still recovering from a snapped achilles tendon in December, after re-introducing speedwork too early after a lay off. And he has been running for 15+ years so you have to be careful!

As for my pulse rate, it inevitably drops as regular mileage is built up over a few months. Resting pulse at the moment is about 42, so 68 for an easy run looks about right. But the top end is about 130ish so 68 isnt quite as low as it might look.

Morning all. Went to the doctor's yesterday and I have a tear in a ligament in my knee. Not good. No more football for me until July 10th. On the upside I can still run on it, as there isn't the same twisting and extreme bending/impact of football. I'll avoid speedwork and concentrate on getting loads of milage under my belt ahead of the corporate challenge on 8th July. Hopefully it will translate into increased speed on a shorter distance! Some good running going on, keep it up everyone.

Rich I have been doing easy runs too... I just wanted to try out my pace today, in fact I started out thinking it would be an easy one and did the first 2 miles very steady pace then I kind of thought I wonder if I can run it under 60 mins and took up the challenge. Know that's not really how training should go but hey!
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Sally - Thats good to hear about the steady runs. Strength first then speed otherwise tears! But it shows that you have retained some strength from the marathon training so keep the consistency going now and you should go from strength to strength.

Beer Tins - Obviously thats frustrating but probably not as bad as it first sounds, we're always tearing ligaments and repairing them to some extent so I'm sure you'll be fine if you look after it. It sounds like the right approach considering...

Knee's not too bad as far as running goes. The Eden project is great, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

If you run up covington way, you are nearly in Crystal Palace already! OK, not quite... There are loads of hills there so you'll probably hate (but benefit from) it! If you want to ease into the hills you could do worse than just going to the park (right next to CP train station) and running around on the footpaths. There are some severe roads to run up as well like Gipsy Hill, Central Hill and Anerley Hill. Basically anything with "Hill" in the name except maybe Westow Hill! I do run on Sundays, but not always locally, depending on what I'm up to that weekend. PM me if you do come up though and I'll come join you if I'm around and free.

Hmm, maybe I should reconsider doing Sunday hills

OK BT, I'm committed to running with the club this Sunday (I could have had a lie-in ), but will hit Crystal Palace park next Sunday for the 'intro'. I'll PM you nearer time and if you will be around, get an oxygen tank on standby please :rotfl:

Have set up a reminder in my Google calender daily for 3 days prior to next Sunday, so can't get out of it!

PS: Covington Way hills yesterday evening: 5 times I managed before the lungs threatened to shut down. The others managed between 6 and 8!!

Hills are good! You'll definitely feel the benefit of them after a while. Cool, PM me and if I'm free we can do it together. What kind of distances/pace are you doing at the moment, just so I have some general idea?!

Beer, at the moment distance is whatever I fancy as my next race is a club 5k at Dulwich. I'm aiming to do a minimum of 10 miles on Sundays (club runs excepted as they run SO much faster than me ). When I've signed on the dotted line for the Eden Project marathon next payday (end of June) I'll be following a Runners World training programme.

My longest run this year was 13 miles which I did in 2:08 - home to Richmond Park and back as penance for missing the actual Richmond Half Marathon in May :D

PS: How long is "a while"? Covington Way never feels any easier - although 'boss' (club elder) reckons it means I'm improving!

  • Just done my first 5k in years last night and felt very good too could have done more but I have an 8 week 10k plan and I want to try and stick to it!!

I did the 5k in 43mins which yes it’s slow but I did comfortably. My plan stated only doing 4.1k but felt too good for that.

Granted that all my running over the last 2 weeks is treadmill stuff at a 10% incline I might try and venture outside sooner that I thought I could have!!

I am hoping to complete the Laganside 10k in September and I am well on course for that I think.

Rich don’t add the above race to your list just yet as I have to register when the registration opens!!
