Sorry to hear that, Hypno.
Aren't ulcers great at telling you when you need rest when you've convinced yourself that you're tough enough to deal with certain stresses?
Obviously getting relaxed is the first priority....as soon as work allows. Hopefully, the ulcers will quickly disappear as soon as the manic period calms down.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks rich - I have taken a day off work next week so hopefully will get chance to "catch up" with myself then. Until then, I have to carry on with work/family/ski stuff but the optional things like running are having to go on hold for just a few days.
Ulcers are horrid though - smiling/eating/laughing hurt soooo muchEven drinking coffee is painful

Fear not Rich... intervals for tomorrow 6 x 1/2m then rest day :cheesy:.
Legs feel just fine.. they even did two laps round the woods "speed" work... i just left them shoot of and enjoyed a slower pace.. i was being good

In which case things are looking good.
If you can handle this mileage on a consistent basis you are going to be pretty strong in 3/4 month's time.
As long as you have enough in reserve to give the speedwork maximum effort, over time you are going to get to the point where you can get really competitive in races - and that's where the real fun is!:D:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

.. thanks man.. but still a long way off that kind of mark
.
The joys of running clubs.. you see all ends of the spectrum... can keep up the front when it comes to the long steady runs... 7.00m - 8.00m miles... as soon as the speed work starts off in the distance they go.
Still only been at the game 5 months bet they been doing it years. ( and the only thing I was doing last year was smokeing away )
and always been more a steady longer runner than instant speed... but i guess that what they train you in the army for... distance over speed.... which is where i get it from.
allthough 1hr 45 for 1/2 marathon slow in some peoples booksCabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
And there you have it in a nutshell!
Thats the reason why it is important to ease back on the distance stuff because it is the long term effect of getting the miles in the bank, week after week, that develops the speed. 3-4 weeks of good mileage followed by an enforced lay off for a similar period due to exhaustion is of no particular use.
But to run comfortably in race conditions at say 5:30/mile should not be beyond you given consistency of effort over 18-24 months. Its the guys who expect success in a few short weeks and then lose motivation when it doesn't materialise who never make it to that sort of level.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
