Hey, that's a heck of a target you have there for Eccup 10 miler. 59:59  That's sub-6-minute miles, and not just one of them, and not on a nice bouncy, flat track! Best of luck with that one! Is it an achievable target do you think?Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

Hi all,
I am new to this thread so a little introduction first... I am in training for the Great North Run in September. I joined up for the Guide Dogs for the Blind in February and as such have been training since then. I originally was doing about 3 miles max. with many breather rests at about 12 min mile. I am now doing on average 6 to 7 mile runs with 1 long run a week of around 9 - 10 miles at a pace of roughly 9 1/2 min mile.
My trainers are causing me considerable pain along the inside of each foot. I get horrendously huge blisters on my big toes, the inners of the balls of my feet and on long runs the arch's of my feet. I have been wearing Nike running trainers. The blisters are that bad they can stop me from running for several days.
Now my question... I have been told that my problems may be caused by a need for extra support in my trainers - my legs may be collapsing in a little and put pressure on my inner feet? I have heard that there is a place called up & running where they measure your gait and running pattern. Do you guys recommend doing this or is there another way of figuring out what trainers would be best? Its just that from what I can see on the web their trainers are quite expensive (with £15 charge for getting your gait tested).
Many thanks for any advice.0 -
Hi Granny, well done on your progress, it looks like you are doing really well and I'm sure the GNR will be no problems to you come September.
Up-and-Running is only one amongst many specialist running shops that will do gait analysis for you. I have to say, though, that I have never heard of a £15 charge for doing it. Whenever I have it done, I buy shoes at the store there and then. I suppose they are a bit cheesed off with people having it done, then buying the shoes cheaper on the internet. My local shop is a Sweatshop and I can't recommend it highly enough. The shop assistants are runners thamselves and know what they are talking about. If you try to find a specialist running shop near you, I'm sure they will be able to help you. Just as a guide, if your trainers wear more on the soles towards the arch/big toe, this is an indication that you over-pronate, so you need more support to keep your feet from rolling inwards.
I hope you get sorted out, your blisters sound horrendous! One of the other runners on here had dreadful blister issues a while ago but new shoes sorted her out. Good luck!Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

Ask around - some places do gait analysis for free, so you can get them to tell you what kinda trainers you need, try some out, then buy them online. Or you can just suck it up and pay instore - most places refund the £15 if you actually buy trainers anyway.
If you tell us where you're from someone local might be able to recommend a good place.
Good fitting shoes may well alleviate a lot of your problems, but also consider sorbothane insoles as well as getting some decent running socks - expensive, but can make a difference (that said, most of the time I just run in 2 pairs of socks - 1 cottony pair, then a gym sock over the top - rarely have any significant blistering...)
...and well done on the running - you're obviously improving rapidly!0 -

Hi Chick,
Yeah, it's one of those 'if you fail at least you'll get fit trying' type of targets.:D
And, as you say, its not an easy course...so much so that only 9 runners out of 576 managed to duck under 60 mins last year. However, that means that achieving 59:59 at Eccup is worth a little bit more than that on a flatter course so it would feel good to do it!:D
Some really good work there, Simply. You have certainly got into the routine of training now and must be feeling a lot stronger as a result. Keep it going.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Uk - Some more nice running there. Hope you're not pushing too hard on these 'steady' runs.;)... felt steady.... infact in places felt slow with head wind.. plus a little de-tour due to the police blocking off a road  ( dont get that up north ) .
i guess the 15m work is paying off, normaly the last 1m - 1.5m is a fight. But yesterday felt good till the end. thats where I found the 2min improvment from. :j...
Still 21mins to knock off it :rotfl:.Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
