    Ah I see, that makes sense, thanks. I think I'll also speak to one of the PT at the Gym because of my Asthma, maybe a job for tomorrow if Iam feeling better. I really, really want to do this as it will be something to do for me rather than everything that usually do for everyone else. I do not really have anyone to run with and am nervous of running along the streets on my own as we live in a really quiet place, but we shall see how it goes.

    How long do you walk for initially? I do not have hours, probably an our each day realistically with housework, work and the kids. Thought it might be best to do the run either before lunchtime or after taking the kids to school and before breakfast. If this is the case would I be best having a small breakfast at around 7.15 with the children and then having the rest of it when I get back later after the run.

    Too many questions, sorry. I want to do this right. I started running a couple of years ago as I a couple of stone overweight and I had a miggling hip - but I ended up damaging my hip and could not even walk on it for 3 weeks and had to have 6 months of physio on it. I want to be sure I will not make the same mistakes again but since losing the weight I have not had the problems with my hip so fingers crossed this is not going to be an issue.

    I would like to think about joining a running club eventually, something to blow the cobwebs away I guess.

    Walking for as long as possible is the way forward, basically - certainly you want to try and do 40mins + when possible.

    As for breakfast, how much do you normally eat that it would require two sittings? :)

    Personally, I have a bowl of muesli and some orange juice first thing, then am set to run any time from around 90 mins later - any sooner and I'll get stitch / heartburn / indigestion / other grown up complaints I don't understand...

    Hello to all the newbies and welcome back Becky.
    I went for a run at lunchtime and only managed half a mile but it was hot and I did need the loo. A little disappointed in myself. Will give it another go tomorrow.

    Oooo thats was fascinating ;), and yes there is something there but its on the fibia not tibia - the smallest bone in the leg and the ankles were lit up like christmas as well (especially the one that gets sore sometimes) - so I'm no making it up which is good news, but its not so bad that its going to cause any more problems for now - got to see the consultant again next week and work out a plan of action :D

    Hypno - whens your 10k?? I'll amend as necessary - and PM me your email as well please :D

    Rachel - dont feel disappointed - it happens sometimes, off days, small virus, humidity - just try to brush it off and get back out there - dont push too hard next time in case you are a little under the weather - just ease back in, you'll get another good one soon :D

    Hi all,

    Just want to echo what others have said, start with a very gentle run for as long as you can, then walk the rest. The problem with walk-run is that it allows the muscles to cool down, making them more prone to injury when you set off again. And you're doing this over and over again.

    I also hate the first 10 minutes of running. The breathlessness is uncomfortable at the start. I start off gently, but once everything is warmed up and settled down I'm much happier! Stick at it, once you're running longer distances you'll enjoy it more.

    As for motivation, you need to visualise what it is you want to achieve. Picture yourself crossing the finishing line in a certain time, with your loved ones cheering. Picture yourself looking good on the beach/in a nice outfit. That should be the motivation to get you out the door. The running itself does become enjoyable after a while, once you start covering greater distances.

    As for me, well I got about 5k into my run this morning before I felt the niggle in my knee return :mad: I stopped immediately of course.

    I don't know why it's come back all of a sudden, I was just starting to handle the longer distances better. I'm going to cut out interval work for a while and just do steady runs with a very slow and long warm up. If that doesn't help, off to the doctor I go.

    Becky might be mad at me now :o. The reason I didn't go before is that it basically went away on it's own.

    Nah I'm not mad - its come back because of the increased mileage - take a few days off if you can and hen come back to running and ease back into the speedwork - there is more injury with this so you need to make sure you are fully warmed up and take the first set/rep more slowly :D

    No - I am at work till 5...then pick up daughter no 2, make tea, make sure daughter no 1 can mind daughter no 3.....then I will be off....woooooshh:rotfl:

    Thanks :) I'm off to Spain on Friday for just over a week, so I may shake things up by including a daily 30 minute swim on top of plenty of easy 4 milers. Then I should be OK for my long run when I'm back on the Sunday and can ease back into intervals the following week.

    I don't think the need for a gentle build up at all levels of running can be over-emphasised.
