Thanks guys for you advice. I think the problem is that I'm not very fit yet and need to get into a routine. I keep pushing myself to make sure that this run is a bit faster than my last. I'm sure as I get fitter I will enjoy it more as I'll start to be less out of breath quicker

Right I'm back and seriously jet lagged ;)

Off in a while for the second half of my scan...but in the meantime I'm in the mood to kick a few bums...

Right Sammy - claim your 'me' time and dont take no for an answer. Running should be something you want to go out and do - if you dont want to then do something else with your me time, but if you want to do it - get up earlier or go at lunchtime or whatever - you'll find it slips into your life pretty easily once you're back into the habit - consistent training is the quickest way to improve and carries the least injury risk :D

Blue_monkey - we've said it many times - we dont recommend run/walk here - do the coach to 5k if you want but its not a great way to get into running as it doesnt build your core fitness enough and carries risks of muscle injuries, so while you're not feeling well enough to run are you able to go out for some nice long (4+) walks and build your bone density and muscle strength that way??

Sally - I'll do your plan if you want - what kind of target do you want, how many miles a week do you think you can stick too and how much speed work did you last time roughly as a % of total work?

Scorgeous - it sounds like Idio is right - you are pushing too hard and its unlikely your 5k time will drop dramatically before you start running longer distances - you dont have to master each distance on its own, in fact your times will drop just by virtue of over training each distance (unless its a marathon)

Blushingbride - I wouldnt think about a marathon till you have got into a consistent training plan and are regularly running 20-25 miles a week - to train for a marathon you should put in about 30 miles a week minimum, from scratch base its more (I had to do about 50 miles a week for 4 months to get to 4:31 to give you an idea), try some other distances first and you'll naturally progress to the big one anyway :D

Simply - send me an email with your revised dates and I'll re-work your plan too!

Its good to be back and welcome to all the newbies - its great to see running biting so many people at the moment - its one of those great equal sports that gives back exactly what you put in - whatever your goals :D

Uk - you've been knocking out some great times by the way = super impressed and a little jealous!

Off out for a run after my scan this afternoon - hoping for a nice long one but we'll see what effect jet lag has :D

Becky can do 20-25miles a week I guess, not sure if thats enough or not? Speedwork, is one of the things I never really got into and thats why Im still plodding along at the same pace. Really want to do it now though so make it as hellish as you like ;)

Oh and target time of 54 mins I guess to start with
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Okay Sally - can we revise to sub 60?? Then if you get on well sub 54 could be on the table anyway...its just easier for the plan - you can always amend the speedwork to be tougher if you're getting on well :D

Okay I'll draw it up later and can you pm me your email addy (I think I had but I lost it ;))

You'll need to do speedwork though to get to sub 60 - I suspect some bulk intervals and a bit of fartlek and hill work would be enough since you have a great base fitness and the distance wont be a challenge, this will be about getting your legs used to different speeds and then increasing the time you can keep up that speed for :D

Okay plan done Sally - just a note - for the interval sessions - just run them faster than your usual pace - not full out or you'll find them really tough and wont want to do them - and end up like me ;)

Thursdays run is optional for the sub 54 if you can fit it in :D

    Hey!
    i'm a newbie!

I just completed the race for life in 40minutes with no training! i now have awful blisters

I would love to do the london marathon and am thinking of doing the norwich half marathon in November as a start!

I used to run alot at school & have a treadmill but its very noisy so until i move it into my garage i cant use it!:(

thinking of joining a running club

Hey there BB - I did the Norwich RFL this weekend too!

If you ever want anyone to run/plod with, PM me.......I did the Norwich half last year and will be doing it again this year :D

becky, can I have the same plan for 10k as Sallyx please? We were so close in all our FLM training that I am sure we can work off the same plans.....?

Can I ask how you train when starting out, please. Someone said here that you do not do the walk/jog method, can you explain more please. Thanks.

I have asthma that is quite bad but is controlled so I do have to be careful and ease in gently but I think once I have established myself and am fit enough I'll be fine. Unfortunately my condition is not going to be something running is going to get rid of (I *think* this is what AM might have been suggesting - apologies if that is wrong), this is a life condition for me and I've had it for 29 years now and have doe long distance running before but I am starting again, however it means I've got to build up carefully and not exert myself too much. The last thing I want to do is have an attack while out and get into trouble.

I've not got anywhere to walk really but I am a member of the Gym so I can use the treadmill there but the Couch to 5k plan reckons you can do 5k within 2 months which seemed ideal to me really.

Hi BM - the advice on this thread is generally to build up a base of walking for a few weeks before trying to run.

then, run, and see how far you get, but don't start running again - walk the rest of the way.

then next time, run, get a little bit further than last time, and when you need to stop, walk the rest of the way.

soon you will be running more than you are walking, going further and further without stopping,

the idea behind this is that you are putting less strain on your muscles and joints as you are not doing stop/start stop/start all the time.

    hope that helps!
