Hi, first time I have posted here! I started running after Christmas and have been gently building it up by doing a combination of walking/jogging around 3 times a week. I have always done some sort of exercise but I am 38 years old so have deliberately taken it steady. A couple of weeks ago I started getting a pain in my groin when running, it goes off within a few hours of stopping. It got so bad that last time I went out I had to walk home. I am so gutted, I really really love running and dont know whats wrong. OH paid for me to get properly fitted out with trainers when I started so I know its not that. You guys all seem so knowledgeable and I love reading your posts, hope someone can give me some advice.

If its a new pain when it started a couple of weeks ago it will probably be due to an overstretching incident.

A common way to pick up such a strain is when starting to do speed sessions because you're stretching tendons and muscles beyond their comfort zone.

Other causes can be slipping while running on a rutted surface or mud or having to stop suddenly.

It is likely to self correct but dont do anything other than easy runs until it feels good again.

If it persists for a few weeks then a sports physio visit will probably be a good idea.

Thanks for that. Before I started to have the pain I had been running on a public footpath across fields which was really uneven and I do remember stumbling a couple of times. I have read that you shouldnt run on the road all the time because its not good for your joints, I wonder if this is true? I live in a very rural area so its road or rough paths and tracks really, no parks around!

I am a bit worried about going down the physio route because of the cost but I guess if it doesnt clear up within a week or two that is going to be the sensible option. Just worrying at the moment that this could be the end of running for me.

It depends - I pretty much do all my training on the roads without any problems (up to 100 miles per week). There is more risk, as you have found, from running on uneven surfaces - you do tend to pick up more injuries from cross-country races than from road races.

Get yourself some Sorbothane insoles, if you havent already done so, to take all the force out of the impact. Then try to stick to level surfaces - well compacted trails/paths are fine but roads are the safest option from my experience.:D:D

100 Miles a week, blimey, that is serious running!!! Yeah I think I am going to stick to roads from now on. Will also research the insoles.

Thanks for the advice, going to try a gently walk/run tomorrow and see how I get on.

    Evening all.....oldies and newbies alike!

tomorrow is my Race for Life - it will be interesting to see what my legs can produce after the marathon.........I am hoping for 27 mins ish, but will just see how it goes.

I have four black toe nails after last weekend - they are a little uncomfortable, so hope they don't give me too much grief when I am running tomorrow.

Will report back when I am done!

I too will try bigger shoes then, next time!! I haven't suffered from this before - but I have to say, my trainers are very comfortable in every other respect so I would be reluctant to change them before they wear out!

I will just have to put up with looking like I have leprosy :o
