Its time to forget any plans relating to Abingdon I'm afraid.:rolleyes:

Mine and Becky's entries were rejected due to the 'event having reached its maximum no. of entries'.

It is a full 6 months before the event and very recently this was an event which accepted entries on the day.

It is another example of how difficult it is to find suitable marathons nowadays to get an entry in. The London disease has got hold of this event too with people entering just because they fancy the idea after watching London on telly with no real intention of training for it.

Last year the event accepted 1000 entries and only 647 turned up! It filled by June last year with a closing date in September. So next year you'll probably have to enter 8 months ahead which causes more people to enter with only a vague notion that they may be actually going to run it.

Time to go and look for alternatives................I could be some time!

I can't believe it Rich, how annoying is that and quite frankly its getting rediculous. How on earth are people supposed to be able to prove their time so they can get into races (LM) if all the preceeding races are given away to bloody charity runners? I feel annoyed for you both. Off to apply for Bristol before its too late!
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

    It is annoying, Sally.

The trouble is that you used to enter races when you were pretty sure you were definitely going to be ready for them. Now you have to enter miles ahead, which you are reluctant to do with the cost of entries as they are.

It seems that the organisers are aware of the problem as they are prepared to accept transfer of entries between runners as long as they are advised of the switch. As such, some enterprising souls on RW have set up a waiting list for those who want to sell their entries on. However, you cant train towards an event for which you have only a slim chance of buying a place from a drop out.

There are a couple of alternatives but with entry limits of 500 it will be tough to get in those.

The organisers have it tough because of the costs involved and therefore have to limit entry sizes to use smaller roads. Typical costs to host a 2,000 runner event are now £50 - £60K. Once you get above this you need city centre/major roads and the costs skyrocket due to policing.

I have a vague idea that an event run twice each year in April on LM day and in August just before the 'Good For Age' cut off could be quite popular. The event would be run on a PB type course but at 2-3 am to make road closures less of a problem as bus lanes could be used in built up areas.

Anyway, there's a little race to run in just over an hour so I'll rethink the plans a little later.:D

Uk, it used to be the case that you chose to do foreign marathons just for the travelling aspect/sightseeing etc. Of course, it is something that most runners want to do every now and again anyway. But to HAVE to take that route just to find a race is worrying.

The malaise in British distance running will not be cured by foreign marathons.

LM have all the power to sort things out, but have no inclination to do so!

We still have an excellent April Marathon locally - Bungay Black Dog Marathon and Half Marathon - usually the week or two before London

  • Its terrible that so many people enter and dont turn up or bother to withdraw. I dont expect i'll ever do a full marathon but i wouldnt contemplate it unless i could do at least a half marathon. The trouble is the media has over the years given the impression that everyone can run it with a little bit of training and people see the dressed up runners half walking at the start and seem to think the whole thing is like that. I wonder how many enter and cant even do a 5k? mind its the kind of selfish times we live in.

How and when did you apply Rich? I posted my application last Tuesday so it looks as though I can expect a rejection notification too.

Has anyone else entered and been accepted?
