    Week2 (Abingdon)
    Mon27/4 Rest Day
    Tues28/4 Rest Day
    Weds29/4 14.0 Miles 1:49:14 (7:48/mile) (Pulse108)
    Thurs30/4 10.0 Miles Fartlek 1:15:39 (7:34/mile) (Pulse 100)
    Fri1/5 10K 47:21 (7:38/mile) (Pulse 102)
    Sat2/5 Parkrun Leeds Hyde Park 5K 19:41 (6:21/mile) (Posn 24th)

Another good turnout this morning - probably surpassing last week's record turnout of 196. These Parkruns are certainly becoming popular!:D:D

Anyway, I'm pleased with 19:41, getting within 7 seconds of the PB, because I ran Thursday's fartlek very hard and was still feeling it.

Simply, I entered around Wednesday I think. If you entered by post you've probably missed out I'm afraid. It looks like the LM ballot closure simply triggered a manic rush to fill places in other events!

Its terrible that so many people enter and dont turn up or bother to withdraw. I dont expect i'll ever do a full marathon but i wouldnt contemplate it unless i could do at least a half marathon. The trouble is the media has over the years given the impression that everyone can run it with a little bit of training and people see the dressed up runners half walking at the start and seem to think the whole thing is like that. I wonder how many enter and cant even do a 5k? mind its the kind of selfish times we live in.

KYCU - You've hit the nail on the head there!!

There is also an increasing acceptance that someone who wants to plod round in 7 hours has just as much right to a place as someone who has worked their butt off to get down to 3 hours fitness. Whatever happened to working hard and earning your 'right'? Some people wont be happy until every event has become a non-competitive 'fun run'.

The fun element should add to an event not take away from it!! The London Marathon is a AAA athletics event NOT a fun run and as such the 'athletic' element should be the first priority!!

I added another two streets again today but still taking my total run to just over half a mile. I've been following your advice and taking longer walks (at least half an hour) before I start and I haven't had problems with my shins.

I'm sorry for those who didn't get a place in the Abingdon marathon. I supposed the only way to stop time wasters is to only open it up to club runners.
I would like to go for a marathon in 2011-2012. Suppose I need to put my application in now if I'm to get a place.

Well done Rachel, steady progress without forcing it is exactly the way to make most progress long term without injuries - so you're doing just great.

I'm afraid you cant enter events before the previous one has taken place - so its going to get to the point of a mad 1 day scramble for every decent event soon, reduced to the same scenario as booking for a Michael Jackson concert!

The solution is for LM to support provincial events so that they can accomomodate higher entry numbers. They should then make completion of one of the provincial events a pre-requisite for entry into London.

But instead of making achievement the central element it will remain prioritised on 'how much money can you raise for charity'. A sad state of affairs. LM have forgotten the people who made their event!

Hi there, That's a disappointment about Abingdon Rich, I was considering having a go there myself.

I think Prague will be a plod for me now, as I haven't been able even to get a good last week's training in, due to back problems and working day and night. Oh well, I hope I'll get round based on the training I have done so far. Fingers crossed....

I have had a quick look for alternative marathons. On Sept 20th there is the Anglesey Marathon and on 24th October the Snowdonia Marathon. I know someone who has done Snowdonia and it is a really beautiful race. I don't think it is PB material though, because it is hilly (well being in Snowdonia it couldn't be anything else really :o ). I think my OH might be planning to run Snowdonia this year. He has always wanted to do it and he is just eating up the miles in training now.

I'm not sure if I'll do another marathon this year, the training is just so demanding. Maybe I'll stick to the half.

Thats a shame that the back hasn't fully healed up by now - there's still another week to go.

Having said that, you got plenty training done previously and with your 10K getting close to 50mins you've certainly got the ability to maintain a decent pace.

So, as always, caution at the start and you'll probably find that you're in pretty good nick. 10 mile warm up, 10 mile run plus 10K race ...the marathon mantra!!:D:D

The alternative would have to be a fast course for my purposes as I was planning on having a serious crack at 2:45 to gain a Championship place for VLM2010, with a fall back position of gaining a Good For Age place in VLM2011 as long as the time is under 3:15.

Although I'm sure Snowdonia would be extremely scenic I cant see me doing the necessary times in that race. The favourite replacement at the moment is the inaugural Fleetwood Marathon (was previously going to run the 1/2 marathon there) but with an entry limit of 500 I'm going to have to be quick.

Good luck with the final week preparation. When are you going to Prague?

  • been advised to repost this here to see if any of you racers in this thread can help me

has anyone used the website http://www.race-results.co.uk to do online entries and is it ok? Im thinking of entering the carnival 5k in june but these guys only take payment by bacs/google/paypal which leaves me to pay by bacs only.

There is a run next week in morecombe but this has been my first week of running full 5k's so im thinking it is to soon next week? I am pretty sure i can get round without walking as i dont do it on the flat now but I know i'll be at the bottom end of the runners.

    what do you think?

Rich. so i take it theres no confirmation that you will attend these marathons say a month before? forgive my ignorance.

KYCU - I've never used that site, but I'm sure its fine.

However, for most of my entries I use this site:
    http://www.ukresults.net/2009cal.html
I've always got a great hassle free service and you can certainly enter the Carnival 5K through here.

The answer to your other question is No. Except in London you can hold your place over to the following year if you're sick, lame or lazy....but you can inform the organisers of this after the event as far as I'm aware.

    Hi All,

I did my second run outside last night with my friend (another non runner!) We did the same 3 mile route as Tuesday but in reverse and I think it was harder the way we did it last night! She needed to stop and walk a couple more times than I would have done, but we did it in 42 mins which was ok I think. I said I think we should carry on with that route until we can do it without stopping and then start to do another, or maybe just add on some streets!
Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.
