Evening All
Went out for long run but didnt get too far (about 9-10 miles) - got an infection so my temperature is a bit crazy and decided to leave it rather than push...felt good running wise though and ran for 1:42 or so...
Saw a bunny rollerblade parade down the mall and into Hyde Park that was quite funny
Off to get a KFC shortly and will reply to Diana later.
Sarah - mapmyrun is amazing!!! I've used that and £7 watch for my trainingJust gotta put a 2 mile extension on it for my 6 mile route. I figure that I won't get the Nike + just yet, I have a perfectly decent mk1 Nano, and a stop watch on my phone (which I won't be allowed to go without anyway!) so why waste my money!?! I will definately invest in some decent trainers though!
I wish OH wasn't at work tonight, I wanna get going on my route now!

Now I can't run at all!! Not even for a bus (if I liked buses!!).
I'm not overweight, 9st and 5ft 4in, used to go to they gym every other day but have slowed down after an injury so am about to start going again!!
I want to take up running and am entered in a 5k run for the last weekend in June!! All advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Diana and welcome:D:D
Great to here you want to start running - I was like you last year - I couldn't even run around the block so its amazing what can be done
I would echo the advice given to Sarah and Bagpuss the best way to start is by walking between 4 and 6 miles at a brisk pace for 4-6 weeks then move up to running as far as you can while feeling comfortable and then walking the rest of the distance.
6 miles is around 10k so you'll need to train up to about that distance to really feel strong over 5k.
Good luck - any questions please ask0 -

Hello all, I've not posted on here before but I've just started running about 5 weeks ago having never run before (and being 4 stone heavier than I ought to be!) Anyhoo I've just done the North Tyneside 10K run today in 1 hour 18 mins which I'm quite pleased with considering the excess weight coupled with the fact that I've not run / walked more than 3 miles before today! :j
Oooooh my legs are a bit sore today like! My quads, and my upper arms are really aching so had a wee stretch and may brave the treadmill tomorrow or Wednesday. I'm just uploading some new music onto my ipod shuffle as my original ipod has died. My trainers are the Nike + ones, I was wondering whether it would be worth investing in the Nike + system when I replace my ipod?Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.0 -

Hiya guys, been following this thread for the last couple of days, since I decided a couple of weeks ago to take up running:eek:
I haven't done any running since school, and even that was just at PE/play time etc.... added to the fact that I am 30 next year, and school was a LONG time ago!
Anyways, I saw this and I'm a little worried.... guess what I have been doing!?! I've only been out twice, because I need to go and get 'fitted' for some proper running shoes (and figure out what the Nike thing actually does, and whether I should get one etc), but both times I have done walk/run etc - I got that from 'the beginners guide to running' off netdoctor.com
So after that ramble, I guess my question is, if thats not the right way to start, what should I be doing? I am deadly serious about wanting to do this, not just a passing idea...

*sneaks back off again into novice corner*
Hi from the novice corner!! Cos that's where I live too! I was advised to walk / run at first and build up slowly, but when walking it's walking at a reasonably good pace. I've entered the Newcastle Race for Life (5K) and the Great North Run (half marathon) and the Great Run website has it's own free training plans on http://www.taketothestreets.org It's free to register and I've found it useful!Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.0 -
Welcome to all the newbies, everyone is doing really well so keep at it! Personally I wouldn't rush into buying the Nike+ system until its something you have thought about.I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Hi, Im quite new too, I used this site to find the right trainers for my feet, then searched ebay for the cheapest pairI have quite a high arch so the new trainers compensate for that, they are great. Ive got Nike Air pegasus +25.
Also I find it so much easier to run with someone, give up quicker if I go myself.March £10 per day Challenge- 460.85/310 :jApril £10 per day challenge- 361.49/300May £10 per day challenge-365.23/310June £15 per day challenge- 732.24/450 :T :j0 -
Hi Everyone,
I'm back from a fantastic weekend away in Scotland. We stayed in a hostel right next to the West Highland Way. On Saturday OH went up Ben Lui and I went for a 20-mile training run along the WHW from Tyndrum towards Crianlarich (and beyond!). I was out for around 4 hours, so the pace was slow, but it wasn't like road running, I really had to watch my step every moment, because the path isn't always even underfoot. There were steep hills, stiles, gates, cow muck and wonderful, amazing, breathtaking views. I've attached a couple of pics of the valley I ran along just to make you envious!
I can honestly say it was one of the best, if not THE best training run I have ever had - not for pace, just for being so enjoyable. I felt safe, the weather was perfect and there was something new to see round every corner.
Yesterday just for good measure we walked up Ben Challum, a Munro near where we stayed. The walk was about 7 to 8 miles and again, the views were amazing. This is me and OH at the top. Check out the view!
After the drive home today, my legs are really stiff, but I think I'll manage an easy run tomorrow just to loosen them up again.
By the way, great to see lots of new runners on the thread. There are quite a lot of us in marathon mode at the moment, but don't be put off. We were all like you one day and hopefully you'll get the running bug as well. Keep at it and let us know how you are getting on.Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90
