    Hi K_Bagpuss,

Well done on completing the 10k with 5 weeks training!

GNR is the buigest race in the world so the atmosphere should be great :D

Its a big step from 10k to a half marathon so you'll have to start training seriously which will help you lose the excess weight too!

First thing - stop doing run/walk! If you've been reading the thread you'll know we dont advocate it here as it easy to get injured going from cold muscles to running :D

Build up your distances slowly - you'll need to over train for the distance so the longest runs should be 15-16miles - try runners world for training plans :D

Good luck on your running journey!

Hello and welcome Bagpuss; that's some going for a first run - well done!

It was an 8 miler for me today but it felt good so I kept going for a little while extra. The weather conditions helped as it was drizzly and overcast without too much wind. It was quiet out but I saw the Easter Bunnie - he was handing out choccie eggs outside a church. :rotfl::rotfl:

9 miles, 01:30:46 (10:01/mile) according to my Nike sensor.

I've invested in a timex bodylink system it turned out to be very money saving as they were out of stock and offered me one with a damaged box for a very hefty discount, so I'm getting used to that and will be comparing the time/distance with the Nike. I haven't quite got to grips with it yet though so will keep trying (I am sooooo not techie) :D

    Wow well done Simply!!!

Rich's first 10 mile run was 1:40 so thats some going for a first crack at 9 miles - you must be beaming right about now :D:D
  • Yes, I'm pretty pleased Becky. I just hope that the Nike doesn't prove to be too inaccurate or I could find that I'm running less distance than I think I am - it doesn't compare too badly with Mapmyrun though.

I can't quite believe that I've managed to run 25 miles this week; it's a great feeling. :j:j

WOW simply - 25 miles is a great mileage to get up to as well - some people dont even get up to that weekly mileage in training for FLM!!
  • Becky - you're kidding me right??? Sooo, if I keep going do you think that Rich can put me on the list as a definite for Abingdon?

I needed to get a good run in today as I was a bit nervous about the 11k trail run having seen the start of the course yesterday. Still I've got another couple of weeks before I worry about that.

Have you been out for your 20 miler today?

Sadly not - they are 6 hour guys though or the non finishers :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Of course we'll put you on the list - you're going to be good - I can feel it already :D:D

Just enjoy the 11k - all you're doing is putting down a marker and it took me a few races before I got into the swing of it :o

Not yet - still in bed currently :D
  • *sneaks in amongst the 'real' runners*

Hiya guys, been following this thread for the last couple of days, since I decided a couple of weeks ago to take up running:eek:
I haven't done any running since school, and even that was just at PE/play time etc.... added to the fact that I am 30 next year, and school was a LONG time ago!

    Anyways, I saw this

and I'm a little worried.... guess what I have been doing!?! I've only been out twice, because I need to go and get 'fitted' for some proper running shoes (and figure out what the Nike thing actually does, and whether I should get one etc), but both times I have done walk/run etc - I got that from 'the beginners guide to running' off netdoctor.com
So after that ramble, I guess my question is, if thats not the right way to start, what should I be doing? I am deadly serious about wanting to do this, not just a passing idea...

    Sx

*sneaks back off again into novice corner* :)

  • Oooh, 6 hours - the pain!!!!! As for not finishing???? My new mantra is one I read on this thread the other day - Pain is temporary, failure is permanent. Thanks to whoever posted that :D

Glad to see that you are still resting; you'll be sure to have a good run after all that inactivity:rotfl::rotfl:

    Hello Sarah,

Drat I've been avoiding you on the NSD thread because I've been naughty and spent loads of money ;)

    Welcome to the thread :D

I only took up running in June 08 and couldnt run round the block at that point and in two weeks I'm doing my first marathon so there's nothing that says you cant be deadly serious about running now :D

Okay run/walk is often recommended to beginners because it gives them a sense of achievement straight away but it also increases the injury risk due to running on cold tight muscles.

If you're in for long game then you're much better off starting with 4-6 week program of brisk walking to build fitness and bone density. Then progressing up to running.

Try walking 4 times a week - 4 miles 3 times and up to 6 miles once - that should get you in great shape to take up a good running program. Rich started in this vein last September and ran up to 100 miles a week in the build up to his marathon last weekend - totally injury free and bagged himself a great time of 3:24!!!

    Any questions just ask!
