And a superb opportunity for carbloading - all that alpine food, plus pain au chocolat, gaufres (waffles) - perfect taper time :D:D:D

Ok question...once you have completed marathon and want to move onto the next one Rich what sort of plan do you do? I mean you know you can cover the distance but obviously want to improve the time. Do you continue to run a long run or drop down and work back up again but putting in more interval sessions?

I though 'Never Again' was the next step!!!:p:p

But the answer is to evaluate to death how the race went, looking at every angle of what felt good and what felt bad.

But just because someone crosses a finishing line doesnt mean that they have run a marathon - which is the task of running from Point A to Point B 26.2 miles apart. Less than 20% of people claiming to have 'run a marathon' have actually done so.

So, for most people, that is still the aim during the second build up. There's no point in building in lots of speedwork if the biggest gains are to be got from running the race continuously.

Everything is individual of course, but for most people the second build up will be very similar to the first, but with more knowledge of why the long runs and regular mileage are so important to avoid pain on the day.

Becky got a great experience on Sunday by witnessing the whole spectrum of emotions during the last 10 miles of a marathon. To have that fresh in your mind going to the start line of a marathon is invaluable.

There will be a greater capacity to take on the training workload during the second build up but apart from that the greatest difference is the knowledge gained from the first. But not really any great difference in the type of training if that makes sense.

Very good point Rich....and I guess in an event like FLM the percentage of people claiming to have "run" a marathon is very high. I hope that I will be one who will be able to say that and it will be true!
Thanks for that info and yes probably the hours after FLM I will be saying never again...

Well if you think about it (and I'm not ashamed to admit this) I have never continuously run a half marathon - Brighton I walked up a hill at 10 miles and Blackpool I walked off my stitch! I'm sure I have in training but its puling out the results in races that matter.

Considering how many miles a week I run - the marathon is going to be a seriously tough order even for me - but I dont mind if I have to walk half a mile or so out of 26.2, if that happens I'll get a continuous one next time :D
