Hi there, runners! Sorry I haven't been posting recently, life has just got in the way. Unfortunately, I've fallen out with running. I haven't had a good run for so long, I can't remember why I do it any more. I don't know what the problem is really, whether I'm not fully over the virus I had a couple of weeks ago or what? After I had been off work poorly, I went out for my long weekend run but after 14 miles I was so exhausted OH ran home and I walked to my mum's and he picked me up in the car. Because of work and family committments I didn't run until Thursday last week, when I did a comfortable 9+ miles with the ladies group. Then on Saturday I went out for another long run and had to phone up at 11.5 miles for a lift home. I could hardly put one foot in front of the other and just felt so exhausted! I went home, had a bath and fell asleep and wasn't fully awake all evening.

I don't know what to do! Help, Rich, I really need some advice!

The trouble is, there are so many other demands on me at the moment, I think it is all down to stress and I should probably see my GP. Work (year-end rapidly approaching, and a very demanding chief exec!), family (mum had a fall recently but Ok now; son plays footy and needs ferrying around all over the place), trying to organise a wedding in June  with OH working away all week. Running is just becoming a chore, along with all the other tasks I need to tick off my list. HELP!

By the way - Becky - hope the shin is holding up OK. You must have been so upset with the diagnosis. I hope it doesn't give you too much of a problem.

Rich - superb running as usual. You must be well on target for Blackpool.

Hypno - I am with you girl! I feel exactly the same. Where can you buy extra hours for the day? Keep up the training you are doing so well!

Everyone else - ignore me, I'm just having an off day! :o Keep up the good work you are all doing, it sounds like great progress being made!

(sorry for such a long post - making up for time away ;) )

One thing that is for certain, Chick, is that if you've fallen out with running sooner or later you will fall back in love with it as sure as night follows day.

The overall tiredness whereby you literally feel like you can't run any further after (for you) relatively short distances sounds very familiar. You haven't actually run out of energy in your body in that sort of distance so the delivery process is the problem.

It sounds to me like you should explore whether you've started to slip into anaemia. If you have it's good news because its easily solved. Anaemia simply means the blood can't deliver oxygen in the bloodstream at the rate the muscles need.

A simple blood test will show up whether your iron is low, or indeed if there is some other defficiency. If it is anaemia, you need to eat iron rich foods such as liver and dark green vegetables in the presence of vitamin C (effervescent tablets at any supermarket - just drop in a glass of water). You will literally spring back to life in 2-3 days if this is the problem.

But first things first, a blood test at the GPs .....

Take a break and concentrate on getting enough sleep and the right type of foods...and then just wait for your enthusiasm to return. Your body is telling your brain it doesn't want to run for some reason, so let it sort itself out and come bouncing back with renewed enthusiasm. I'll guarantee it will given a bit of time....:D

chick, a quick way to test for low iron is to pull down you lower eye lid - if it is not very pink then you need a bit more iron......

I have been anaemic over the years, and was given this prompt by the nurse - always a good indicator of whether I need to take my iron tablets and get out my "101 recipies with spinach" book......

I find the sweet/savory combination a little too odd for my taste......
