Lol next years is March 14th ;) 100 recorded finishers although i suspect they aren't counting the other 6 service personel who did it in full gear and 15kg backpacks plus water on top. One of them finished 20 mins behind me and said before the wind he as looking at a 4:00 finish so for him the wind added 35 mins.

  • Hello everyone *waves*

I'm a n00b on the running scene, and have been training with a friend who has a forerunner.

Does anyone know of anywhere selling them cheaply? I see that PC World had a crazy sale a while back, but online and my local store are long sold out :(

The cheapest I've found online is £103 for the 205. I know this is pretty good against the RRP, but I'd be gutted if I saw one onsale at the PC World type price in a few weeks! lol

Any help would be gratefully appreciated :)

    Cyprus marathon and a PB

It all started off back in October when my brother pretty much demended i come over and run it being he is based out there with the RAF. He got us a flat on base too which was good, nice and cheap too.

Flew out wednesday to acclimitise better being i knew it could be hot. Did a spot of sight seeing with the parents and ate loads of stuff mostly the wrong thing probably.

Quick rundown of what was what on which day

Wed: Nowt really, dinner was a full meze. Basically a multi curse meal full of meat mostly. If i recall it was hulumi with bacon, pork shish kebab, sheftali sausage, chciken shish kebab, stiffado, and pork chops. All with pitta bread and unlimited salad from the salad bar. The local red wine, kokineli isn't bad either.

Thur: Dinner was at the local italian which although very good was also not cheap. It was also my turn to pay icon_sad.gif During the day we slipped over to Limasol for a bit and i had a huge (and i mean HUGE) jacket potato with sausage, beans and fried egg filling for lunch.

Fri: Went for a 4 mile run around 9am was somewhat hot for the first two miles but on turning back for home the slight breeze was refreshing and cooling. Also inadvertantly picked up the pace finishing somewhat faster than i started. Dinner was a BBQ once we had gotten back from Paphos to collect my race number and goodie bag etc.

Sat: Went to the local flea market where brother got a fair few things for peanuts to go into his new flat just down from the base in Akrotiri village itself. Dinner was sheftali sausage, mash and beans plus in my case a load of stew too.

Sun: Race day, dinner was a very good indian situated on base who didn't hae a clue where to go of base to deliver. Race itself see below

Mon: Whilst having breakfast my peace and quiet was disturbed by a U2 taking off. Noisy blighters they are. Headed over to Ayia Napa and up to the border with the turkish northern part of cyprus today. Dinner was calamari and chips as well as the left overs from brother and dad's full kebabs. THese are similar to the meze's in that they come as several courses.

Tue: Today we went up to Polis in the north west which is the nearest town to where the parents are gonna have there home. Also headed up into the mountains to view the plot of land where the house will be built. Dinner was a full kebab for me as i was hungry icon_wink.gif

Wed: Before flying back home icon_sad.gif i spent some time cleaning brothers new flat. Floors where swept and mopped mainly. A few beds assembled too. Food was mostly a bacon bagette on the plane which had presumably been made in the UK as it sure had evidence of being on board for more than the 90 mins before i got it. Must remember to buy food on the outward journey only in future unless the airline has a hub where i am flying from.

Time for the race itself now i think.

Woke up on the sunday to a nice sunny day with a fair bit of patchy cloud cover and a stiff breeze. The breeze naturally was fro the west, the direction the route was mostly run in naturally. Handily the wind helped keep you cool in the sun cos as soon as the wind dropped you sure could feel it.

The course was technically labelled mostly traffic free and flat but both of those are relative to Cyprus as the route was along the old main road between Paphos and Limasol so wasn't that quiet. Plenty of space to run on though and not overly hilly, ust some undulations. Most of these where in two spots, the start which was uphill and near Paphos itself. The drinks stations were every 3km too which was a handy in the heat, i walked with to drink at each one.

Anyway less waffle split times in miles although i was coping the Berlin plan and aiming for 6 min km's to a sub 4:15 as long as possible.

    9:32

10:10 extended drink walk to cool off
    9:25
    9:23
    10:44
    10:01
10:24 last 3 miles uphill, warm and through roadworks with lots of dust clouds
    8:59
    9:33 toilet stop
8:48 last 3 miles dropping down towards the coast through Paphos's outskirts
9:46 out and back run to get the distance right, i hate legs like this
    10:18
10:05 suffering from heat a bit here with a few walk breaks also carried on into the next mile a bit
9:43 time skewed as once i hit marker 41k it was full speed ahead 25.5 to 26 miles was done at 8:40 pace
    2:52 for last 0.33 miles @ 8:50 pace

Total 26.33 miles in 4:13:13 @ 9:37 pace. Actual finish time was 4:13:12 a new PB by 13 mins and 14 seconds.

Most of the run was into a headwind of a strong breeze which was at times blowing people into the road itself. Obviously leads to the question in less heat and les wind what time would i have done. The answer is i dont know but probably between 4:05 and 4:10 at a guess. If i do do Edinburgh i'll have to think hard about what time to aim for. Not entirely convinced i can go sub 4 at Edinburgh but perhaps somehere else later in the year instead.

    Well done KMS. :)

my only personal point from your great mini blog... is that my Cypriot Bother-in-law to be told me that them Giants Snials where part of the local Meze that he ordered and not eating them would be a high insult... so hense I ate about 5 of the bliters while keeping up the british upper lip saying... Yeah these are nice... ;)

Dont see them on your list mind... ;)

  • Great report kms and well done for knocking off 13 mins in those conditions.

Rich I haven't committed to any races yet but will do a search and find some that fit in with my training plan; I'm still hoping to get fit enough for Abindgon.

I tried a new hilly route today and it went a bit wrong when I realised that the railway bridge I'd been hoping to go over didn't actually go anywhere except the other side of the station. So I ended up going up Station Hill, Hill Road and Hill Place - anyone notice a theme here? Yes, it was slightly hillier than I'd anticipated.

So, 4.14 miles in 41:30 (10:00/mile) on a lovely sunny day, with a light breeze - lovely!!!

Sorry forgot to say hello and welcome to decembers_spawn; I've been looking at foreunners too. Had a quick look in our local PC World last night and they don't stock them any more. Will have to look on Amazon I think.

Amazon are about £115 for the 205. I'm sure that £100 is a great price, but I thought I'd hang on to see if anyone here had spotted some super-cheap :)
