At the weekend I was having a chat with my fellow lady runners and someone brought up the subject of sports massages. One of them has been having physio for an injury and during one of her treatment sessions she was chatting with the physio and when she mentioned the marathon training group and the sort of mileage we are doing, the physio was aghast that we don't have sports massages. Does anyone have any experience of sports massage? When is it best to have a massage? Straight after a very long run, my muscles feel too 'damaged' to have a massage, but would it be beneficial at any other time? OH is having physio too and his said that runners shouldn't wait until they are injured to see a physio, we should apparently be getting regular maintenance!
Any thoughts anyone?
Yep, massage is good!:D
The main purpose is to promote the flow of waste products out of the muscles and into the bloodstream to be got rid of. As such the massaging should always be towards the heart, and in fact would be counterproductive done away from the heart, to help the flow.
But you can get most of the benefit by self massaging since it is mainly the legs that accumulate waste products.
Professional sports clubs all employ physios for a reason, but how an average runner would afford to is a bit of a mystery (as well as the time involved in getting to one).Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Rich - yes i have 2 more runs planned now that iv joined the lincoln league, iv got a 10km bang on next wednesday, thats ment to be a killer as its hilly and muddy!!!! and then the week after iv got another cross country approx 10km again. So iv got something to aim for i wanna get below the 10 min miles on race days if i can but i will be happy to just finish.
Then i will have 6 weeks with no races then its the road racing season for the lincoln league so should get some pretty good times during them if i can maintain the training.
Becks - I will get the pics posted as soon as we get them
I had a right laugh and met some really nice people who i wouldnt have normally talked to, the guy that finished first i think came in around 25 mmins for the 5.2 miles so im a little off his pace, but he did finish the race then pop a rucksack on and run back to his came which was over 10 miles away!Running Club5KM - 25:20(51.21%) 10KM - 53:40(50.26%)1/2 Marathon - 2.14.57(44.20%)Marathon 5:11:00 (40.78%)0 -
That's a good series of free races, JJ.
Plenty target dates to keep you keen in the coming months then.

No more running now for 3 whole days until the Trimpell 20 on Sunday.
It seems a bit odd to have had a rest day on Monday, and then a 3 day rest period later in the week, and yet still end up with a 66 mile week. It doesn't seem to compute somehow.:p
Happy running today everyone.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
