*coughs* excuse me...stop eyeing up the ladies or I will bully you this weekend

Well done on the sub 6 minute mile - very impressive!
Chick some great running there too
I was too stiff this morning to run intervals so I did an easy 5 and I'll do my intervals tonight...it took me 4 miles to warm up and get some movement ack into the muscles so I'm glad I didnt push it or it could have been injury town
I quite like doing my intervals in the evening anyway because I can have a longer warm up and I'm not pressed for time
Happy running all!0 -
Who me?:p
As I said, I didn't allow myself to be distracted, in fact I didn't even notice them! In fact, what ladies?;)
Anyway, I'm glad you're listening to your body - it always lets you know what it is ready to do and, more importantly, when it is still repairing/resting.
As with mine this morning, just allow plenty warming up and then 'go through the motions' and before you know it you'll actually be moving at a pretty swift speed and having a good session.:D
Lots of coffee during the day won't do any harm too!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Its a good job we wont be running together this weekend since you'll be so far ahead of me - I would have to slap you for eyeing up ladies during races :rolleyes::rolleyes:0 -

Hey everyone, i've been reading this thread since i got to work this morning and decided i should come out of hiding and post! :j
I am a 24 year old, obese, female smoker and total newbie, and have signed up to run the BUPA manchester 10k for the third year in a row. But this will be the first time i'll actually do it. :j
Two years ago i was over 23 stone  and despite going to the gym etc i managed to develop asthma from being so huge and so my doc advised me not to run without losing some serious poundage first.
Last year i was finally doing something about my weight, i was on Lipotrim, basically 3 milk shakes (made with water, about 400 cals in total) and 5 litres of water a day. Which was great for losing weight, but utterly pants for any kind of exercise.
Anyway long story short i got down to just under 17 stone :T so about 6 stone off, but then gave my knee i flipping wazack of an injury (thankfully not permanent damage) and also managed to break a bone in my foot, for the footie fans amongst you i was told i'd done "a Rooney", all i know is it hurt like hell, so through my total lack of exercise i'm back up to over 19 stone.
So essentially i have no running experience, no real fitness, and my only goal is to finish the 10k, not to do anything amazing, just finish! If i lose some weight and the ciggies on the way then even better!
I have been walking at the gym and can comfortably manage 5km/hr for 20 mins, but then jump on the cross trainer and swish my way to 1.5km usually in 10 mins.
oooohhh and i went out and braved my local running shop, despite being the fattest person in a ten mile radius and a lovely if somewhat scary woman :undecided helped my find the perfect shoes, Nike Triax+ Zoom 12's???? I have stoopid narrow feet so asics and reeboks just sort of fell off, my shiny new nike's are perfect.
any and all help/advice/kicks up the back side are welcome and will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

pinkneonmartini well done on coming out on this board, where all here to achieve something, doesnt matter if its finishing a race in record time or just making it too the finish line.
The walking that you are doing is the key to making it to running, a good foundation will be esential, but one of the more techincal runners will be a long shortly to help.
SO, welcome and enjoy the mad and rather querky sense of humour on the board and just enjoy doing the exercise no matter what that involves.Running Club5KM - 25:20(51.21%) 10KM - 53:40(50.26%)1/2 Marathon - 2.14.57(44.20%)Marathon 5:11:00 (40.78%)0 -

Hi pink. I'm an ex smoking runner. Now that I run, it helps with the cravings i.e. I know it will hurt like hell when I run.
I'd say the best thing for you to do is to do LOTS of walking to start with. You want to get your legs used to covering 10K and it doesn't matter if you do that running or walking. Incidentally, you burn off the same number of calories walking a KM as running it. Serious runners burn a lot of calories because of the distance they cover, not the speed they run.
It's good that you've got a race to aim for, it really helps to have something like that for motivation.
Once you feel ready to run, start by jogging gently for as far as you can and then walk the rest of the way. You will find you naturally start running for longer and longer periods each time you go out.
There are runners of all abilities here and there is lots of help and encouragement available. Ditching the fags will help you a lot, but I know how tough that is, so one step at a time!
P.S. I was about 13 1/2 stone (Male, 5'8") and lost about a stone without changing my diet at all after I started running. If you are on a low cal or low carb diet you should be fine for walking/jogging, but once you start running longer and longer distances you may need to start taking in more calories (don't worry, you'll burn them off!).Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Hello pinkneonmartini,
Welcome to the running club :hello::hello:
Beertins and JJ are right - walking is a great way to get started and heres why:
1. Walking burns more fat than running and as many calories
2. Walking helps build bone density and muscle strength
3. Walking is much kinder to your joints than running - if you are obese the stress running puts on your joints can lead to injury...
Start with a brisk pace for as many miles/kms as you cant do and gradually over the course of 4-6 weeks build that up till you are walking about 6 miles - thats the distance of a 10k and if you can walk it you're not far off running it
:D
You should aim to be walking about 3/4 times a week - one slightly longer distance that the others.
Hayleygrey is doing a smiliar plan at the moment and really progressing too
, once you're ready to run as Beertins says run as far as you can as slowly as you can then stop and walk the rest of the distance - this should build up till you are running 4 miles easily
Dont forget to come back and let us know how you are doing
