  • Good afternoon runners,
Well circuits was as hard as i thought it was going to be:-
Working in 3`s one running and the other 2 doing exercies at either end of the gym. Then the runner was running to the bleep test for 5 shuttles then changing over this when up to level 15 on the bleep test then we shortened the running to 3 shuttles till level 20:eek: , then down to 1 shuttle sprinting for the last 2 levels( level 22 is the last one).

Okay so I was having thoughts about heart rate and exercise and found this table on target heart rates from the American Heart Association:

    Age Target Maximum
20 years 100–170 beats per minute 200 beats per minute
25 years 98–166 beats per minute 195 beats per minute
30 years 95–162 beats per minute 190 beats per minute
35 years 93–157 beats per minute 185 beats per minute
40 years 90–153 beats per minute 180 beats per minute
45 years 88–149 beats per minute 175 beats per minute
50 years 85–145 beats per minute 170 beats per minute
55 years 83–140 beats per minute 165 beats per minute
60 years 80–136 beats per minute 160 beats per minute
65 years 78–132 beats per minute 155 beats per minute
70 years 75–128 beats per minute 150 beats per minute

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:which means I must be old before my time :D:D, since my target is 98-166 - um I dont think it ever gets up to over 120 and is usually around 80...now coachie does that mean I'm not working hard enough??

Hmmm food for thought there :o
  • Dont mention food after training not good for the cravings!!LOL
I rarly get my heart rate that high when im out on a run but during circuits i have noticed that it can exceed 200 after about 20mins everytime. Iv always found that my heart will keep going no matter what Iv thrown at it although at the end today i thought it was going to burst out my chest.

when iv been on ther treadmill though its always said that to do fat burning only work at 60% of Max Heart rate and at 80% for cardio training.

For the 25 year old going off the treadmill you should be working at max 156 bpm for cardio training

    Hope this helps!

  • Cruel Cruel Cruel thats a fav of mine as well!!

I wish mine would stay that low, even on a run i think its never dropped below 130 but will be having a good check the next time that i go out now just to see if its as bad as i think.

130 JJ - are you out of breath all the time?? I run on training (i.e. not speedwork or tempo or hills) so I can confortably sing along to my music the whole time - between 80-90bpm...tempo is 100-110 and speed is 110-120+ (very occasionally)...

    I only get up to 130 when I've got a cold or a bug...I must be a freak :D

  • Becks, i wouldnt say out of breath all the time but definatly heavier breathing than normal, it takes me a while to get into my stride and breathing rytham, and once i get into that zone i seem to just relax more and find that i still breath more than normal but is not as though its hurting me to breath.

I dont know if im running too fast or what but i always feel that i cannot run any slower or else ill stop as it seems that when i try and either slow my pace or shorten my stride to slow me down i just cannot find a rytham and it doesnt feel comfortable to run at that pace if that makes sense?

It's important for people to remember that the heartrates are just genereal guidelines, as everyone has different resting heartrates, hence the wide range in the target heartrates from becky's list. As long as you don't exceeed suggested rates, the only comparison that is useful is my own. I have a resting heartrate of around 54, but that doesn't necessarily say anything about my fitness. Some people have lower or higher heartrates regardless of fitness, so comparing yours to someone else's is pointless.

It's useful as a tool to compare your training effort to your own previous ones, but otherwise doesn't tell you much.
