I would be making a complaint to Nominet. Peter Hough has stated he has registered the domain as a private individual and so can hide his address:

However, this is plainly not the case as the domain is running a business. However, the main URL for the company is actually www. rentapadlettings.moonfruit.com and then forwards to the domain name owned by Peter Hough. The email address is also slightly different being www. rentapad4lettings.co.uk which is owned by Rentapad:

This URL points at the same website. I'm wondering if the original website address expired and Peter Hough bought it speculatively and then tried to sell it back to the company but in any case the registration does not correctly reflect the content of the site.

I still think you should report them to Trading Standards:

Didsbury is covered by Manchester Trading Standards:

    Manchester Trading Standards Service
    1 Hammerstone Road
    Gorton
    Manchester
    M18 8EQ
    Tel: 0161 234 1555 (8.45am to 5pm)
    Fax: 0161 957 8379
    Email: trading_standards[at]manchester.gov.uk

    Hi,

My friend told me about this forum post. I'm the Peter Hough who owns the domain in question.
    Here's the story:

I was owed my deposit money from Rentapad and tried to contact them several times. Whilst researching Rentapad, trying to find ways to get my money back, I found quite a lot of blog and forum posts about Rentapad and their questionable business practices. I wish I'd found this information before I decided to rent a flat from them so bought a few domains to host an archive of reviews/comments in the hope that other prospective tenants would find the information. I actually emailed Rentapad informing them of this, but got no reply.
I then started court proceedings with the deposit protection agency, MyDeposits, and as to not harm my case I decided not to publish anything on the domains until it was over. I'm pleased to report that I got my deposit back from MyDeposits a few weeks ago and I still intend to create an archive of reviews/comments at these domains as soon as I have time - if anyone wants to help compile a list feel free.

As far as I could tell 'Rentapad' isn't trademarked and so couldn't find any reason why owning these domains would cause a problem. I am a private individual and in anycase their company name is 'Rentapad Residential Lettings'.

To clarify Rentapad owns rentapad4lettings.co.uk which points to www. rentapadlettings.moonfruit.com
    I own rentapadlettings.co.uk and rentapadmanchester.co.uk

Sorry the links are a little hacked, as I new user I couldn't post them.

    Regards,
    Pete
  • Welcome aboard chuchu1 and Peter.

Both of you (and of course anybody looking for rental property in Manchester or for a Rental Agent) need to be aware that Rentapad doesn't exist anymore.

My daughter was, sharing a tenancy of a house let by Thom Doherty's Rentapad company with two other young people from Aug 18th 2007 until March 2008.
They had the house professionally cleaned and vacated in good time with the exception of one of the 3 who asked permission to drop the keys off a few days late because he couldnt get to rentapad office in time. He obtained permission to do this. Many months passed and Doherty was e mailed and called on countless occasions to try and obtain their deposits back. I decided to help my daughter get hers back. I called every hour on the hour and eventually got to speak to the guy. He claimed that they all left the property late, the keys were returned late and the house was in a very poor condition and had to call in professional cleaners. He therefore maintained that the deposits would not be returned
Her third share of the £650 deposit only got returned when I made personal appearances in the office at
    115A, Lapwing Lane,
    West Didsbury,
    Manchester,
    M20 6UR
and threatened to go to court

Eventually he agreed on a sum of £158 would be returned to each of the three after having taken out a week's rent and the ficticious cleaning company's bill. We agreed that this amount would be paid back to each person's bank account .
Each of the three reluctanly agreed to this and replied to that effect.. Still no monies were returned and I so I embarked on a relentless bombardment of e mails and phone calls until one day he actually called ME and said that he had authorised the payment. My daughter recieved hers but to this day the other two people renting this house have not recieved a penny.

This guy is a crook and it's unbelieveable that he can still be allowed to operate. I came across this thread and decided to try and help so I have called the trading standards on 0161 234 1557. A chap called Pete Duffin is investigating this on behalf of trading standards.
They recommended that everyone does this so they can add the information to a central file
  • I've tracked him down...36 Fir Road, Swinton, Manchester, M27 5DL....and he has responded to correspondence sent to this address. He has a mortgage. He does drive a Green Jag... Reg no. FP54 WUJ. Good luck fellow victims!

Does anyone know if the info on swinton is still valid? Stockport council are trying to have us for a full year's council tax on a property we lived in for only 6 months, and won't let us out of it without proof in the form of a tenancy agreement, which now... 12 months on... we still don't have from Thom!

Thought it was all over and done with - I hate HATE H A T E that evil selfish excuse for a human!

    Ok, sorry, vent over!

Can't recall whether this was posted earlier in the thread but the Crain's Manchester Business pages carried a report in Jul 2009 of a CCJ

Thom Doherty, t/a Rentapad Residential Lettings & Property Management, 115A Lapwing La, M20 6UR, £615

What do we reckon- the return of a Ts deposit? Rent payments owed to a LL?

I hope that Ts signing up to a property let via one of Mr Doherty's offices will ask him about his own credit records/court history
  • That will just be someone issuing a CCJ against him, another tenant trying to get their deposit back from Thom, or a Landlord trying to get their tenants deposits/rent off him. It's nothing new I'm afraid, I've been keeping an eye on this website too!
