Times Square (ooo if markymoo was here he hates times square, worth a mooch though)

i AM here, and i still hate times square.... it rips off tourists, and is there IMO, only for tourists.

yes, it is great for a photo opportunity, walk from 47th street down to 42nd street, but then do something else..

on another note, if you want a posh expensive meal (and i mean expensive), check out the David Burke Townhouse on 61st Street, at Lex...

I've just had my birthday meal there, and i'm still overwhelmed how great it was, and as a solo traveller, they didn't treat me with disgust, but with respect....

and another plus point is the SUV Limo parked outside for the social outcasts of the world, smokers, where you can sit down and enjoy a smoke.... can't go wrong with that...

Less than 2 months for me for our trip now.

Quick question re entry into America.

My OHs passport was issued in 2001, will he be ok with this (has 3 black lines on it with Info) or do we need to get a new one? Thinking I need to apply now if we do but as its a suprise trip and I shouldn't be telling him for another 6 weeks I am really hoping we won't have too!

Mines only a year old so no issue for me.

One of Martin's :A weekly emails, (think it was last year sometime) mentioned about the prices of passports going up and he said you can renew any time up to one year, before it's due to expire - so if for example your OH's passport expires in March 2010, you can apply for a new one in April 2009 and you'll get 10 years and 11 months on his new passport.

You could always say you've heard on here that they're going up in October this year or something and he should renew now?

Thanks (?) for the reply. I know you are just bein daft but it's really not much a laugh for him having lost his finger in a gross accident with a band saw - my question was serious as he is embarrased by it

Having been to the States 7 times now, you'd think I'd remember which finger it was they scan, but I can't. I wasn't impressed with the previous comments either TBH. Do you mind me asking which finger it is, your OH is missing?

Someone on here who's just been more recently or markymoo might remember which one. Is it the forefinger?

Or I'm going to Canada on Wed, so can tell you which ones they scan after I come back.

Thanks for that - I thought from previous posts it was all fingers. He is missing the majority of his wedding ring finger. Luckily we are both marriage dodgers (even after 10 yrs) so we have not had the dilemma of where to put a wedding ring!!

I'm almost 100% sure it isn't that finger - you have to press it on the pad quite hard - it's either forefinger or index finger.

Isn't index finger and forefinger the same thing? Either way, its the index finger they scan for sure as I had a big cut on mine last time which caused no end of grief in trying to get a good image. :D

Off to NYC for Halloween again this year and can't wait :j:j

I still say that whatever finger(s) they scan, they can only scan what's available, and if their finger of choice is not there for any reason they'll have a second choice.

And I would expect them to treat missing fingers with tact and courtesy.

I would imagine it would only cause serious problems if it was bandaged and they were suspicious about the reasons for that, eg in floyd's situation it was difficult to get a GOOD image, now if s/he'd had a whopping great bandage on it and said it couldn't be removed, or particularly if both hands were completely swathed and unavailable but otherwise you looked the picture of health, that might make you look dodgy.

Because if you've been fingerprinted for criminal reasons, they do ALL your fingers, don't they? So presumably ANY finger CAN be matched, it's just for admission purposes they limit themselves to one finger. And if they can't take a print of your forefinger, they will presumably make a note of which finger it was they scanned.

We came across some fantastic break dancers, and there was an amazing firework display one night, across the water somewhere.

As long as it's not too hot ... I wilted a bit! But we found some strange sculptures, and interesting buildings that we knew nothing about from the guidebooks.

  • I'm posting here as I got no response on my own seperate thread

I booked my flights the other day, £532 for 2 adults and 1 infant, retuen from Liverpool to New York, GREAT price in my opinion, so well chuffed with that.

I would be greatful if anyone has any good tips/advice on travelling with a 6 month old? Its my first time travelling with a child/baby on a plane so I have no idea what to expect, what I should be aware of etc.

Also, thinking about booking with these http://www.montmorris.com/ anyone heard anything about them? She has quoted me £767 for 7 nights including tax,se[FONT=Verdana, Arial]ems pretty reasonable, don't know much about the area though? If anyone can find any thing around the same price or cheaper I would be greatful, I seem to be going round in circles here  ...I know that's cheap, but surely there has to be a good offer out there. I thought about priceline, but that does seem to be pot luck, and to be honest, I really haven't got the time to research it.

Anyway, your help, any help will be hugely appreciated.

One of the main reasons that b&b is so cheap is its location, its borderline Harlem, I know harlem has come up in the world over the past few years, as much of manhattan has, but it can still be an "interesting" area, also if you want to do the typical tourist bit, ie times square, top of the rock, esb then you are, for example 73 blocks away from times square, I also noticed that you are 4 to 5 blocks away from the nearest subway too, which means a walk out anytime you want to get anywhere.

The feedback on tripadvisor seems pretty good:

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d207996-Reviews-Bed_and_Breakfast_Mont_Morris-New_York_City_New_York.html

So it really depends what you want from your trip, you will get to see a "real" side of NY however you will also be quite some distance from the sites.

No one can help with your costing because you havent said when you were going.

One final thing, and its a bit of a niggle if you say you "have'nt got time to research it" then what makes you think anyone else has got time to help, after all its your holiday, mini-rant over.
