Driving from NYC to Miami is around 1286 miles, and will take around 20 hours.

That's like driving from Glasgow to London, to Glasgow, and back to London again.

Is it too much? For me, no, I've driven 1000 miles with a night stop for work before, so something like that for me, who does drive a lot for a living would enjoy something like that. However, if you don't drive 30k miles a year normally, then you might struggle with the high concentration levels you need for continuous driving (this week i've done 700 miles and it's nowt for me, i'm used to it!)
We didn't find driving too difficult in the US, but the only way I'd consider doing that kind of journey would be as a 'road trip', taking my time, making regular stops, planning in some sightseeing to other places. Oh, and avoiding any big cities - no way do you want to drive in NYC itself!

Yeah, I'll second that... Get out of NYC by public transport, and rent a car there. It'll be

    a) cheaper
    b) quicker to get to the rental place vs, renting in NYC and driving past it!

P.S I hate packing my suitcase and hand luggage.. though it has taken 5 minutes and my clothes are packed, now it's all the little things I need to make sure I have... ugh! Fly to NYC tomorrow morning! wooo

marky, after several d'oh moments, I now have a list of things we need to take on ANY holiday. It lives in my suitcase, and I even check it when packing to come home. I also know what I want in hand luggage and what in the hold (which reminds me, set of earphones I need to check ...)

  • Still not decided on what to do between NYC & Florida/ Miami area yet - might just get internal flights... or does anyone know of good places to stop off between the two?!

Iv got a few quotes of flights from UK to JFK return for around £600 for both of us - is that about right?

+ £300-400 for internal flights return to Florida

Do you need to be upper class/ super economy or is the normal economy good enough quality when flying to the US?
