Hi - has anyone flown from Manchester to Newark recently with Continental? I know its a small plane for a transatlantic flight, but does anyone know what kind of entertainment package there is in economy? According to their website the 757's have Direct TV (where you get more choice and can stop/start programmes) but I'm unsure if this is just on internal US flights?

    From www.seatguru.com:

Continental Airlines recently completed installation of audio/video onDemand and in-seat power on all the Boeing 757-200s.
This is now the only seating configuration for the 757-200, and it is used for both domestic and international routes. Beware that all C, D, and E seats in economy have significantly limited underseat leg and storage room due to the presence of an entertainment equipment box.
    Economy Class:legroom 31.0" 17.2" 159 seats
All economy seats have shared power sockets as well.

I am going in October, found flights for £351 each direct.

Also found a 'hotel' called Holland Motor Lodge thats sounds basic but good value and cheap.

    anyone used it?

    Hope this helps.
  • Hi All

I'm going to New York in 4 weeks for my 30th birthday, with my mum and my sister. We got a great deal on the flights as my sister works for virgin but have had a hard time finding an affordable hotel near Times Square. We eventually booked in at the Pennsylvania but am now finding some really bad reviews about. I'm hoping it's gonna be ok as its really only gonna be somewhere to sleep and shower, we've alot of shopping planned!!

Theres alot of tourist things we want to do but as we're only there for 3 days, we're limited on time. Any suggestions on whats really worth seeing apart from the shops of course :D.

Do you realise that pennsylvania hotel is'nt that close to times square? The one upside about the location is the closeness to Macys, which Mrs Phatbear would be happy camping out in, and remember your 10% out of towners discount card.

Whats worth seeing is up to you, for instance you may be happy spending some time looking round muesums and art galleries and wandering about central park, or you may wanna see a show/sports event, or you may wana do all the "tourist" sights ie esb, times sq etc.

    Its all personal preference.

Hi, when we went-this time last month to be exact:sad: we literally shopped till we dropped. We hardly did any tourist attractions-we didn't have time as shopping was our priority:rotfl:In all honesty, we found the best deals in new jersey-not manhattan.Having said that we stayed in New jersey and our hotel was opposite a small shopping complex with huge branches of TJ MAXX,MARSHALLS and KOHLS.We were in them when we woke up and just before bed, lol. The place for shopping In manhattan Is century21-i GOT A PAIR OF d&g jeans for 8.99(in dollars that is)7 for all mankind down from 175.00 to 11.99:eek: and other such bargains:DMy son went ralf lauren mad and has bought enough stuff to last till we defo go back next year.

Don't worry about seeing the tourist attractions and don't worry about your hotel. I thought staying in nj would be awful.Don't get me wrong you do have to take a bus to get into manhattan, but that was 20 mins max each way.You really are not there long enough, so if your happy to stay at the hotel you booked,go with an open mind, look forward to your drip and dust off your credit cards:D

Still not decided on what to do between NYC & Florida/ Miami area yet - might just get internal flights... or does anyone know of good places to stop off between the two?!

Iv got a few quotes of flights from UK to JFK return for around £600 for both of us - is that about right?

+ £300-400 for internal flights return to Florida

Do you need to be upper class/ super economy or is the normal economy good enough quality when flying to the US?

Hi, I would say that is about right, £300 ea for flights, possibly lower if there is sales on, (check BA) and for hotels about £100 per night as well.
