Hi everyone! We're off to NYC for the first time in November for our honeymoon! It's the wife's first time in the states, but i've been 4 times before.
A bit nervous about taxis and the metro - and i'm worried we'll be so overwhelmed by everything!
Thanks for all the tips!0 -

What date you going?? I am going for the first time on the 27th for 3 nights, still trying to work out which hotel though:D0 -
We're going early - fly out on the 5th (lots of fireworks!). We're staying at the Park Central hotel just off broadway. It's got mixed reviews but wasn't too bad price wise as we got a good deal through Expedia.
We've already got our tickets for Wicked too!
Late nov will be nice, all the Christmas stuff should be out, and you might even get a bit of snow! Let us know where you book!
Phew. That was a lot of exclamation marks. Can you tell i'm excited?0 -

Taxi's you don't have to be worried about, however, if you call the Subway the metro, then yes you do have to be worried..
Click on the first page of this thread, and find the link to my getting into and around manhattan, as it gives you loads of information on the subway, how to ride it, the difference between tracks/trains etc..

Hey Markymoo, what hotel do you stay in when you are in NYC? U stay out of the city dont you?
This time I've split my trip into 3 nights in Brooklyn, at the Hotel Le Jolie, and 4 nights at.. yes, you've guessed it, the Cosmopolitan in Tribeca.
It's different being in Brooklyn, but it's nice. IMO not much to do, so for a first timer, it might not be the best base to work from, but it's cheaper here than Manhattan, (not NJ cheap, but there is the subway close by!)0 -

Hmmm I have to disagree with you cabbies are useless in NY, they usually have no idea where they are going so make sure that:
you know where they should be going
you know the cross street, personally ive taken to having a map about my person to show them where I want to go.
Dont assume they will know the location of anything, the last but one trip the driver did'nt even know where bryant park is.
Dont tell them where you are going until your in the cab, if your fare is'nt worth their while they will drive off and you will need to wait for another cab.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
I've been here 3 nights already, i've taken a total of 0 new york city taxis, as i've just not needed them... i don't know where bryant park is, but i do know where 42nd and 6 avenue is, so theoretically, with that knowledge, I could become a taxi driver, however, i think i need to forget how to speak english!

I had to get out of the habit of calling it the underground!
Thanks for the guide, it makes everything a little clearer. I'm still baffled by the maps though.I'll look out for you, we fly out the 4th November!!0 -

We're in New York for six nights, we're spending a day down in Philly on the Saturday before flying down to Orlando for 10 nights on the following Tuesday.
Don't know if you're interested but Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band are playing at Madison Square Gardens on the 7th & 8th November, tickets go on sale on Ticketmaster on Friday, we're going to try and get tickets for the Sunday night. I'm already registered with the American site so hopefully we'll be lucky.0
