I like the 'not for tourists' guide - I saw someone with the london one the other day and it made me smile :D

I'm not a huge fan of the brits guide, why do you need a brit to guide you around when you can do it on your own. When I went to NYC initially, I took the time out guide book. M

The reason I got it was because it's my first time in New York and its helpful to have some sort of guide on telling me where to go and what to do.

Thanks Marky I read somewhere that someone had a problem with taking a large camera through and also a laptop I don't know :)

Is it £340 per passenger? as there is two of us :)

I can't wait now, I also seen a good deal to New York a cruise on the QE2 in January it was either £599 or £550 per person for 6 days so thinking of that for January 2011.

Thankyou for all your help, I also bought the Brits Guide To New York which I'm giving a good read at the moment

the AA one is fine, it glosses over things and is really just a quick reference to location and minor details. Plus its small and cheap (thanks mum).

IMO the brits guide is really poor. It doesn't find any hidden gems as I like to call them, but decent restaurants and bars seem to go out of the window in that book... try getting a couple of pages of not for tourists. You can download individual sections from their website, and all this book is, is a series of maps, and it pinpoints restaurants, bars, transport links (buses and subway), etc.

oh, and as for the £340, yes, it is per person, but you can't pool your allowance. This means, if you buy something worth £1000, then you have to pay the full duty etc on that item, not the part above £340.

Just got this months edition of lonely planet (july 2009)just for a plane read going to Turkey monday and there is a good section on New York getting the local info on underground "speakeasys" and good foodies that are in town but off the radar . Good read (rest of mag so far is tosh up to page 55 but NY info was good

Just had a complete moment of madness! Booked for us to go to NY next month. It was a good deal and we have been dying to go back so took the plunge and booked. Came to £534 each which includes flights and 5 nights at the Raddison Lexington. Rooms are on the small side but who cares? Promised daughter some Laboutins for her 18th so hopefully will save some dosh there as well!
