I have the CaxtonFX money card and I received an email last week that they have removed the ATM fee.
I think FairFX have a marginally better rate, but charge for ATM withdrawals.
on 17/07
CaxtonFX = $1.6030
FairFX = $ 1.6125
After 1 or 2 ATM withdrawals the advantage is lost.0 -
Manhattan is central, you'll be using the subway a fair bit to get around regardless, but you've only got the A,C,E trains where you are, so you'll probably end up doing the walk to 42nd Street, Times Square if you want to go other places around manhattan..
depends where you want to go really...
well we will want to go shopping to Macys, fifth Ave ,statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, brooklyn Bridge, all the things a newbie to new york want to do
I did ask on here- were we central to everything ...... where do the ace trains go to ?
how far is 42nd street ?0 -

It is impossible to be "central to everything" in Manhattan, as many of the tourist attractions are spread around the whole island. Let me give you a quick guide.
To get to times square you walk. 2 Blocks east, 6 blocks north. Going up or downtown in the grid patterns is shorter to walk than going cross town. So, 2 blocks east will take 7 mins, 4 blocks north will take about 5 minutes. Then you are in Times Square, with the iconic views.
OK, to get to Macy's you need the any of these following trains - 1,2,3 or B,D,F,N,Q,R, easiest for you, is to walk to Times Square, 42nd Street, which is 2 blocks East, 2 blocks North. (9 minutes walk) Then you can get the 1,2,3 from there. (5 minutes on an express train).
On a side note, this is why I say staying anywhere is central. As from the Cosmopolitan Hotel, which is in TriBeCa, it takes 8 minutes to get to Macy's from Chambers Street, but only 30 seconds to get to the subway from the hotel, so theoretically, the Cosmopolitan Hotel is nearer to Macy's because of the time it takes to get there
Fifth Avenue, well, that is miles long, so it is hard to pinpoint where you need to be, but the 4,5,6 to go up and downtown, but the E will take you to 5th Avenue at 53rd Street.
Ground Zero, get the E train to World Trade Centre.
Brooklyn Bridge, Probably you need to go into Brooklyn and then walk BACK into Manhattan. That's the A, or C train to High Street
You're 2 blocks south of West 42nd Street, as you're on 40th Street, between 8th and 9th avenue. This is either classed as Midtown or Hells Kitchen, So you can get around quite easily. Remember, there isn't one line that takes you everywhere, so you will have to change, and learn express and local trains etc.
The best thing to do is look at a map of NYC, use google maps, and the subway map, you can see that on https://www.mta.info and you can start planning. I've been plenty of times, so I know what stops serve what attractions, and where things are in relation to subway stations.
I could go on for ages, working out which train to get, but you won't learn yourself, how good the subway is, if I do all the work for you.0 -
OK, was just having a wee think to myself about things. (yes, it hurt!)
When I go to New York, I'm flying Glasgow - Newark, staying in NY for a few days, the n going to Memphis, so Newark - Memphis.
Then I'm flying Memphis - Newark, and later that same day Newark - Glasgow. If I mention this at the check in desk at Memphis, will our bags be put straight through to the Glasgow flight for us?
All flights are with the same airline
Also, it seems that Continental charge internal bags at $15 - can they take this in cash at the airport or do I need to book online? Thanks!
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -
one questions is, did you book it as one ticket, or two?
if two, you'll probably have to collect and recheck, if one, you go up to the counter, and check in for GLASGOW, UK.. they'll know the connection exists via EWR, as when they swipe your passport.
however, I say that, and it's probably going to be a self check in kiosk.
