    Mortgage-free Glee!
you can only apply once in August i think and they tell you when you can come (good if your a local ) For stand-by tickets, arrive by 7 a.m. on the morning of the taping under the "NBC Studios" marquee on the 50th St. side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Standby tickets are available for either the 8 pm dress rehearsal or the 11:30 pm live show. Only one ticket will be issued per person. Please note that a stand-by ticket does not guarantee admission.

Going in December but want to book SOL Crown tickets ASAP as they're limited numbers.
If we get the ferry from, and back to, Battery Park, how long does it take to reach Liberty Island?
After climbing up and down, how long else do we need on the island. We're not going to do Ellis Island so do we just get the ferry back and wait on-board while it drops off at Ellis? Ideally we want to go first thing so hope to be back in Manhatten by lunchtime.

19" wide steps, 20degrees hotter than outside, and 6'2 height clearance.. the 350 odd steps don't bother me, but if i can't stand up, i ain't going up to the crown of the SOL...

    damn being so tall..

Well we are talking December so 20 degrees warmer might be welcome. And I'm 5ft9 so no need to cut me off at the knees. Funny that I always wanted to make 6 foot but now its a blessing I didn't!
Anyway - anyone got any further words of wisdom on my original query please?

    Stupid question alert!
Which finger is it that they use for the fingerprint? I appear to have removed some of my fingerprints and have heard that they can be quite narky about it...

I too want to go to the SOL crown but I didn't realise that it was limited numbers, I just assumed you could just get tickets on the day or maybe a few days before. :o

Would I be better of booking them before I go? And if so where is the best place to book them?

I get the impression that most people reading this thread go the DIY route. As for whether you book now or wait, I think markymoo and others have said about all there is to say.

I'd be surprised if it made much difference, but I know nothing for certain. Only someone who's made several flights on both Fridays and Saturdays would be able to answer that, and given that you haven't had an answer from anyone who's done that I'd guess nobody knows. So why not make decisions based on what suits you?

My understanding is that most flights are fairly full, regardless of which day of the week they fly. What holds you up at t'other end is if several flights have landed just before yours, and you can't pre-plan for that.

What you can give some thought to is ease of getting to the airport at this end. When I was planning our trip, I flatly refused to rely on catching the first train of the day, which was the only one which would definitely get us to the airport in time for our flight, but which required several changes. Nor was I prepared to drive that distance on the day of the flight, nor could we fit the whole family plus luggage into our car. So we had a complicated arrangement of two boys catching the train to London while 3 of us drove with the suitcases, an overnight stay with the in-laws, and a civilised drive at the start of the next day, with the same process reversed at the end of our trip. It worked better than I expected, but I wouldn't do it again.

Haven't caught up with this thread for a while as didn't think we were going to NYC this year, but have now persuaded DH after all. We always book with Expedia (mainly because we go for the US Open and can't get cheap hotels around that time for love nor money on priceline or hotwire), but will usually work out cheaper than a high street travel agent.

Most people like to catch a reasonably early flight, to maximise time in NYC, and something we used last time and have booked for this time is a £19 Travelodge for the night before on the M4 - glamourous I know, but no worries about getting down from Derbyshire on the morning to LHR - just a hop to the airpark and in.

Thanks for those who suggested Boston with New York, I'll take a look at that, it's not somewhere I considered to be honest.

Or Washington is good for a couple of days.
