I spent a lot of my recent trip in Brooklyn as I stayed with family there. There's loads of bars in Williamsburg, with all the the hip and happening trendsters hanging out there now. Lovers of retro arcades should definitely try Barcade (https://www.barcadebrooklyn.com) - imagine the fun of drunken pacman!!!
Areas of Park Slope also worth a visit (5th and 7th St). Brooklyn really does have a lot to offer for those wanting to go beyond the familiarity of Manhattan."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

SBO9: can't really comment on the other hotels you have listed but the PArk Central is a lovely hotel, rooms are fair sized and very clean and they also have a mini gym on one of the lower floors.
This hotel is smack bang between Time Square and Central Park (which is a good or bad thing depending on your take on things) but the best aspect of the hotel is that it is right next to a subway station. When we stayed we woke up and hoped straigh on the subway and travelled around from there. Like Marky says, the subway is so good you can see the whole of Manhattan wherever you stay.
For my trip back at Christmas I picked up a great deal for the Park Central so will be returning (deal was so good and I know the hotel so went for it) I have recieved an e-mail update today with new deals on the website, chekcthem out but be sure to tick the box that offers all deals. Our deal includes breakfast which we may only use once or twice on our stay but the price still worked right for us.

A point for anyone visiting soon (markymoo perhaps?) - check out The High Line Park (http://www.thehighline.org/) that's opened this week on the West Side near Chelsea . It's essentially a park built on the rooftops of Manhattan on an old railway line.
I'd be very interested on hearing what the views are like over the Hudson and of the project as a whole...as nice as Central Park is, this one looks a great addition to the green space in NY."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

I'm looking for is a room with its own bathroom thats secure and clean. Is that too much to ask for under £100?
Should I budget higher?
Taking points of view onboard here paying more than this is really wasted money. You dont use the room for anything other than sleeping and showering.0 -
I doubt you get your own bathroom for under £100 - I got a room with a shared bathroom for £75 but that was on a special offer - depends what you want really...0

it's kinda amazing how this thread is reasonably anti times square.
yes, we know it's all the flashing lights and that, but, that's it really, and for a first timer it is a must to visit, take the photos, and occasionally I still go back and visit a barman that always remembers me, and gives me free booze for popping in to see him, but other than that, there is loads more to NYC
anyway.. back to the point, the Best Western President Times Square. TripAdvisor is a great source of hotel reviews, There are 415 hotels in NYC itself that are on there, and about 10 regulars on here, so we'd all have to visit NYC at least 40 times, and stay in a different hotel, before we'd cover them all.
So, lets look at the REVIEWS of this hotel on tripadvisor. First thing that stands out is that it comes up at #294 out of 415, which puts it firmly into the bottom half of the rankings, so maybe not that good..
a total of 396 reviews, which 39% think Excellent or Very Good, 25% think Average, 36% think Poor or Terrible. So a real mixed bag to be honest..
Read through that, if you like what you see, book it, if you don't.. then choose something else...
£100 a night is a tight budget to stick to, especially for a private bath. maybe look more towards £150 and you'll be fine, also, remember that some prices DON'T include taxes!

I particularly liked the review that likened the BW President to a crack den.
£150 you say
