OK. what happens with the AirTrain at JFK is, you just get on it.
Then, when you've exited at the station to link to the subway, you walk up to the MetroCard machines, and purchase what you need.

I'll get a Unlimited ride card for 7 days when i'm there, which covers the next leg of the trip, and the weeks travel in NYC, that's $27

But I also need to pay for the airtrain, and as i'm going back, i'll need 2 trips on it. So $10? no.. actually not.

$5 a trip on the airtrain, but you get 15% free with $8 purchase, so a bit of maths is needed here..

    $10 plus 8% is 10.80 so, you're wasting a bit of money.

The best thing to do is click the button for a seperate value, and TRY to see if $9.25 will give you $10 (it actually works out at $9.99), if not, it'll be $9.50 you'll want to put on, giving you just over $10, which is enough for 2 airtrain trips.

Remember, both metrocards look the same, so ensure you put the airtrain one somewhere different, ready for the return journey.

And to be honest becky, you'll be better off going to Jamaica Station, and getting the E into Manhattan where you can change to a 6 train at Lexington / 53rd Street. It's a transfer there to the 6 train, so walking distance underground.

If you get the A, you could change at Fulton St / Broadway-Nassau which you can transfer to the 4 or 5.

The first option will be quicker for you, as you're probably staying UES again..

Ok, ive asked Benz Travel to quote based on this

Im flexible for 5 nights starting on a thursday september, october or november. I will stretch to 6 or 7 if the deal is right.

any 3 star (or better) hotel in the 5th avenue/central park area but must have ensuite bathroom.

    single room occupancy

flights from Manchester with transfers to and from the airport in new york but not the coach service, i'd prefer a private car/taxi

see what they come back with

    fingers crossed...

    geez

they must be having a laugh

they just came back with a quote of £1150 including transfers for 5 night stay.

Where do the £589 prices come from then?

I was expecting around £700 to be honest.

Why you got them to quote, is beyond me, I quoted £667 per person for a DIY holiday, add on $60 for a transfer, and you are sorted. Why you're adamant you want a 3* when you'll spend about 7 hours sleeping and 2 hours in the room a day i don't know!

One thing i've noticed is that you're still trying to treat NYC like a package holiday. "transfers" don't exist, you just get public transport or a taxi, or a car service, i've been 12 times, and never known to be offered "transfers" even when i did book through a TA, the first time we went..

why such a small area for the hotel? NYC is so easy to get around you can be anywhere in 15 - 20 minutes with the subway system!?

i want a little bit of luxury marky. Plus, ive not tried booking anything on this scale before. In fact its been over 20 years since i had a real holiday and that was with my family.

I was going by what was on offer on their website, the prices are clearly bogus though.

if you could work up a quote for me I would be very grateful

    thanks

think mark and griggsy have both given good pointers and spent some time. forget transfers just get out of airport and take what you fancy for the easy hop into manhattan the cheaper it goes the fitter you need to be . Two grown ups with average luggage can go by train for less than a taxi but a taxi is easier. Manhattan is easy to travel around so pick a suitable location and find a hotel of your choice (it has to be your choice we dont know you or what you want from your stay) Culture- iconic buildings-shopping and ice skating in CP for us once we got there i never stepped foot in a museam and regret it now but so much to do and so little time . Food fab bars hip trendy or local trips worth a look at but you can self make them for a fraction sometimes just by thinking as a local.
Holidays to me are more value for money than value of money (if it cost a grand and its worth it its worth it . If it costs £$500 and i have a bad experience or feel could have done better i feel let down)If you want mark or griggsy to do a full breakdown on what they want you to do they will with pleasure but you will be paying for three because you can take them with you.
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

    Hello

Sorry if I'm being a pain but can anyone give me pointers on where to start looking for a good deal to NY please??
I've looked at the various forums and now feel completely confused:o:o

We're looking to go in September, we're not restricted to dates, it'll be just me & my Dh and we would like a private bathroom(I can only seem to find shared:confused:). Don't mind which area we stay in as I understand everything is pretty easily accessible, I guess I'd like it to be safe and have a few decent restaurants/diners around us.

We can travel from Any London airports/Manchester or Birmingham...depends which has the best deal:D

    Any tips greatfully appreciated....Thanks:D

*confuzzled* welcome to the NY Forum, we're a bit mad here and have plenty of tricks up our sleeves

Hotels that are reasonably priced with private bathrooms include the New Yorker (in midtown), reviews ain't that good in my opinion and it is midtown so things (beer, food etc) could be more expensive.

Cosmopolitan Hotel - Tribeca, lovely area, good reviews (this is the hotel that I stay in when in NYC)

There are plenty of other options too, but it depends on price, If your budget is too low, then yeah, you're gonna have a shared bathroom, as your budget isn't enough

Delta and Continental fly direct from MAN, and you should be able to get flights, direct, for around £350 each.

If you don't mind a change, you might be able to get flights for £300,

if you go to London, the price drops to around £280 at the moment, and that's all that is around right now..

Well I started this of a while back and thought that I should really try to finish it.

So day 3 - the reason for our trip......My 30th
Started the day with a Starbucks on the way to the subway up to Central Park. Before we left the UK I had decided that I wanted to spend my birthday at Central Park Zoo and having some downtime in the park. Any how we got off the subway and wandered down fifth Avenue towards the park. On the way we were meant to pick up some yummies for a picnic, but some how we ended up at the zoo before we managed this. I enjoyed the zoo, but it was really busy with school kids. For some reason I think I expected it to be bigger as well, but then you have to remember that this is in the middle of a big City in a park. After wandering around and baking in the heat (not complaining really as it had been soooo cold the first day) we left the park and headed to the shop to pick up a souvenier (think I have spelt that wrong). We continued to wander and stopped off at some of the park eateries, but I finally opted for a hot spicy dog from a vendor in the park. It was very yummy but spicy. We ate this whilst sitting on rocks in the park taking in the sights. After lunch we walked round the park, sat around for a bit, ate ice lollies and ice creams and people watched. Man that place is huge. We didn't do it all but made a good effort.
Just to say whilst we were there we were offered to buy a map etc from some seller in the park, but declined and I am glad we did as just down from him was a nice gentleman employed or volunteering for the park handing out free maps and advice.
After Central Park we headed to TOTR and skipped the line using our New York pass. Spent some time here than headed back to the hotel where I soooo had to soak my feet and legs in the bath.
Sadly as I spent too long in the bath we didn't have much time to find somewhere to eat so ended up at Planet Holywood but we did get $20 off our meal using our New York pass. It was then off to see the Little Mermaid. I thought the show was quite good, but found it strange that people sat talking and singing throughout the show. After the show it was time to wander round Times Square, take a few photos then off to bed - think my age and all the walking caught up with me :D
