I'm trying to be polite here..

DO NOT DRIVE INTO NEW YORK CITY.

NYC hotels can get booked up really quickly, you're best planning it , so you know when you're going to NYC, and how long you're going to stay for.

Any night is a good night in NYC, it is called the City that never sleeps!!!

The cheapest way is a 4 hour coach ride, boltbus, megabus for about $20 per person.
You could get a 4 hour train ride at around $80 per person, or a 1 hour short hop flight for about the same price.

You will need a car for driving around New England, if you're not doing cities, but in Boston itself, and New York City, there really isn't any need for a car. (and this is from a person who drives 30K + Miles a year for his job, and loves driving!)

If however, you ignore advice and drive into NYC, be prepared to pay in the region of $40 - $50 for a days parking. Also, you need to budget at least $150 ish per night for a hotel room, less if you don't mind having a shared bathroom, more if you leave it til the last minute, and ask at the hotel desk for the rack rate.

Thanks for your response Mark its very helpful. We thought maybe we could drive to somewhere just outside New York and book a hotel there then travel in by train. But I'm sitting here at the moment trying to find suitable places.

A apologise for putting my question into the main travel forum as well as this (I also put it in the flights, car & currency forum in error and I dont know how to remove it) The only reason I put that one in the main forum was because I was asking about New England as well and thought I'd get told off in the New York forum. Once again I apologise for offending you

personally, because there are many options to get to NYC from Boston, there really isn't a need for a car.

Yes, you will need one, to get around New England...

Now, if you stay at a hotel outside of new york, you'll have the expense of getting to and from the hotel, and with NYC being a big city, and a lot of walking around, you'll also lose the flexibility of nipping back to hotel, to drop off shopping, or get freshened up.

Also, if you stay a distance out, you might be severely limited in time, and what time you'll have to head back to the hotel, rather than stay and enjoy the diverse nightlife that NYC has to offer.

If you're going to do NYC, you want to do it properly, so the easiest way is to either, train bus or plane it in from Boston, and actually stay in Manhattan

as for the cross posts, well this is more of an NYC discussion, so it sits perfectly here..

if you click edit on your post, you should be able to delete it yourself (afaik)

Am thinking of tagging on a trip to Boston in October actually - hopefully then my work will pay for some of the flight cost (our US office is based there) :D

Looking forward to going again in the autumn - really want to go the Met OPera this time though - has anyone been and can advise on seating and tickets (cause they are very expensive online ;))?

might as well keep you lot updated on my upcoming plans..

11th - 18th September, flying from MAN - JFK with delta, as it's the same price as CO, and i have $50 off a flight coupon as I complained to delta back in March... anyway...

My 12th trip to NYC, and the FIRST time, i'm actually staying 7 nights.... I make it more expensive by wanting to go out in an evening and bar hopping and sampling as many different beers as possible, which is why $2000 spending money is needed for a 7 night trip...

and i'm determined i'm not going to waste $120 on taxis to and from airport, and get the airtrain subway this time...

March i took $1850 for 6 nights, but spent $120 on taxis, and $250 on a ticket to see the hockey... and $150 ish i think on 1 meal out for myself... i spend silly money when on holiday..i somehow still spent about $200 a day, but i did buy some clothes, and gadgets cash, so i think $2k will be enough...

and, as i enjoyed a day in DC back in March, i'm considering taking a day trip up to Boston when i hit NYC in September, so I have to budget to get up to BOS, probably be lazy and fly again (i love flights!)...

Marky - the airtrain/train combo was pretty good actually - especially if there's just one of you, the only annoying thing was the escalator at NJ Penn was broken so we had to haul stuff down stairs :(

area - staying in times square area , but not averse to a walk / cab ride.

    thanks
