thanks becky..
i did the Airtrain twice (there and back) with no luggage when picking up a friend last time at JFK, so I know how easy it actually is. and that is when i was reasonably drunk.... (drinking since i hit new york at 3pm, and it was 8pm i went to the airport.
Probably still going into JFK, as Delta are the same price as CO, so, i'll be AirTrain, then the A through to Chambers Street, which is 1 block away from my hotel.0 -
food - anything, but my partner doenst eat fish
budget - well someone recommended per se on another forum but that would be 500 dollars for 2 of us - so perhaps not that rich
area - staying in times square area , but not averse to a walk / cab ride.
thanks
I'll recommend the David Burke Townhouse, which I ate at myself back in March. The food was out of this world. I'm not a foodie, but I loved that place. cost about $180 for 1 person, which was 3 courses, and a bottle of wine for me...
per se is supposedly gorgeous, and i'm tempted to try it out myself next time in September.
The trick with NYC is to go at Lunchtime, rather than evening meal, and get a Prix Fixe, both perse, and david burke do these, and you can get a great meal at a bargain price
If you want something cheaper, Tribeca Grill do good food, and in a really nice area of NYC, compared to Tourist, sorry Times Square... Get the 1 train from 42nd street down to chambers street, and you're about a 5 or 6 block walk. There you'll be able to have a nice meal for about $100 per person...
Or opposite the Chambers St Subway station is Acapella, about the same price as Tribeca Grill, and again, does nice food, though the atmosphere wasn't as good as TG.
Check out menupages.com for menu's, prices and reviews.

I'm trying for JFK next time in October - so I'll have to do they same and then change to a 4 or 6 I think...
Can you buy the subway card at the A train stop with the Airtrain then?? That would be very good0 -

OK. what happens with the AirTrain at JFK is, you just get on it.
Then, when you've exited at the station to link to the subway, you walk up to the MetroCard machines, and purchase what you need.
I'll get a Unlimited ride card for 7 days when i'm there, which covers the next leg of the trip, and the weeks travel in NYC, that's $27
But I also need to pay for the airtrain, and as i'm going back, i'll need 2 trips on it. So $10? no.. actually not.
$5 a trip on the airtrain, but you get 15% free with $8 purchase, so a bit of maths is needed here..
$10 plus 8% is 10.80 so, you're wasting a bit of money.
The best thing to do is click the button for a seperate value, and TRY to see if $9.25 will give you $10 (it actually works out at $9.99), if not, it'll be $9.50 you'll want to put on, giving you just over $10, which is enough for 2 airtrain trips.
Remember, both metrocards look the same, so ensure you put the airtrain one somewhere different, ready for the return journey.
And to be honest becky, you'll be better off going to Jamaica Station, and getting the E into Manhattan where you can change to a 6 train at Lexington / 53rd Street. It's a transfer there to the 6 train, so walking distance underground.
If you get the A, you could change at Fulton St / Broadway-Nassau which you can transfer to the 4 or 5.
The first option will be quicker for you, as you're probably staying UES again..

You can never have too much money in New York, I'd take at least a £1,000 for seven days.
Have a great time.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

I said this to my OH but think he was worried we would be shopping for the whole 7 days if I took too much :rotfl:
Did you mean £1000 each or £1000 for the 2 of us???LBM 14/12/06 £21,947.17 DEBT FREE 12/04/09

Both of you for drinks/snacks/admittance. It will be tight if you include niceish meals and taxis. The Metro is a cheap way to get around.
You will need more if you intend shopping too.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

A lot of those places you mention are free!
I have been to NYC three times. I was happy to eat in the cheaper of places and spend my money doing other things (like at the Apple store ha ha). It just depends what you want. Went to the best Sushi place there and paid $400, and then went to a steak house another day and ate for $20, really it varies on YOU! It is not as expensive as other cities I have found, though of course the exchange rate doesn't help.0 -
how about asking the question in here- http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1403101
it says EVERYTHING about NEW YORK in shiny letters!
as for money.. well.. i got for a week and take $2000 for 1 person, and i don't do any of the tourist things, as i just walk around the streets, take photos, and then eventually end up in bars, and nightlife, and go see some sports etc.
Also, you'll not get around everything you want to in 7 days.. i can nearly guarantee that..
P.S New York doesn't have a Metro. it has a Subway. Ask for directions to the Metro, and you'll get grunted at. Gotta love New Yorkers..0
