Personally, I think discussion should be kept to the NYC Thread Stickied at the top of the board, rather than this guide..

OK no probs - I've moved these two posts from Mr Moo's NY Travel Guide over to this sticky thread.

    Thank you Crabman!
  • went to NY for a week on February (thanks to all on here for tips and advice) had the most amazing time and loved every minute!

There's something so familiar with it i suppose you see it so often on Tv it feels like you've already been!

Stayed at the Iroquois and was perfect. Location couldn't have been any better, rooms small but for the amount of time your in there it isn't important.

We were so surprised how safe we felt. Having been to LA (in which at times i felt uneasy, especially in Hollywood) we walked about all day and late at night and not once felt threatened/unsafe. People spoke, said hello etc

Travel is so easy, again we didn't realise how simple it would be we navigated the subways and just got on and off, locals were really helpful, on some occasions we mush have looked obviously lost, people offered assistance and helped us with maps.

someone jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge whilst we were having our picture taken from the pier, he regreted it as he jumped and shouted help! luckily he survived and was pulled from the water!

biggest highlight for me was Mary Poppins! :D it was the most amazing show i have ever seen, you think uk musicals are good but this was out of this world, we had front row too (only booked last minute) https://www.broadwaybox.com. GO SEE IT!

We'd booked realnewyorktours due to the reviews on TA before we went, but having already been in NY 2 days before our tour felt we didnt really need it as navigation was so easy ans we'd covered so much. It was interesting but we could have done it on our own.
My advice if you want to do the tour book it on your first days in NY otherwise i see it as a bit of a waste of money.

    We will go back someday!

Hi I wonder if anyone could help with my queries?

My boyfriend and I are flying to Boston on Thursday 16th of September and returning on Saturday 26th September. We currently have only one hotel booked in Lexington for the first two nights and the last night.
As well as travelling around New England we would like to visit New York
for two days. We are planning on picking up a car from Logan Airport when we land, so my queries are:

Which is the best days of the week to visit New York? (we dont want to see a show or anything)

Is it best to drive into New York and find a hotel there? And if so what do we do with the car?

Or should we find a hotel outside New York and travel in? Are the Park and rides? or is it best to leave the car at a railway station and catch a train in.

This is our first holiday to America and I cant wait!! I've still got to sort out car hire (dont know what type of car!) and have still to find pleaces around New England. So I am trawling through the forums finding useful information.

Any help and suggestions would be gratefully recieved x

Do NOT drive a car into New York.

Can you split your car hire into two, and just not have one for the days in NY?

I will repeat someone else's suggestion - which worked very well for us - that hiring a car from the Hertz depot at North White Plains is a very simple way of doing it - train in and out of Grand Central Station, depot just opposite the station at NWP, Nectar points.

We haven't book the car yet. We were planning to book and collect one at Logan Airport. So it may be possible to book in Boston then give it back just before new york and then get another after our two days there.

You can certainly do that with Hertz - we hired from NWP and drove back to JFK airport to drop it off. We were driving round the edge of NY, but that was OK as we were used to driving on the wrong side of the road by then, plus we weren't in the manic city traffic! :rotfl:
