no problems... i'm currently considering flying with Continental as well, however will definitely have to use public transport to get from Newark into NYC, as taxis are more expensive, what with Newark being in NJ, rather than NY state.

thankfully, i'll get skymiles as i'm aiming to go in September, before CO withdraw from skyteam, (delta is in skyteam) and i collect my FF miles, what with the amount of times i fly... :)

Anyway considering how much booze I consumed last night - I needed taxi ;)

Ooo Marky - whats the deal with the black cars that pull up on the curb and yell 'taxi?' at you?? Are they licensed cabs - we got a yellow cab because we werent sure...

    Hello people,
Off to New York in June-Good times! Heard about Customs-Bad times
Anybody know how long roughly it takes from the moment you get off the plane till you get through Arrivals with JFK?

Oh by the way, i trecoomend the New York pass to everyone. I ordered a 7 day pass (£110) and it came in the post last week with the booklet of all the attractions you can go to.Let me know if there is any specific attractions any of ye were hoping to go to and i will let you know if the pass covers it.

    Peace out Money Saving people!

(I have tried expedia and seen some good ones for £600pp but every time I try to book, the price switches and it comes up double, well done them).
Forgive me if it's not something as obvious as this, but is it coming up double because you've said you want two flights?

Only I know I was going "HOW MUCH?" when the total price for our flights last year came up, simply because I knew how much one flight would be, but I hadn't quite done the maths for five flights ...

livery cabs are unlicenced if they pull up and shout at you... they can be prebooked, but are more expensive..

and how come you have a day flight back? surely a night flight is better, as you get more time in NYC?!

oh, and NYC Penn station is useless for me, as I need to be lower manhattan, so if i do land at EWR, i think it's going to be Airtrain, then through to Newark Penn, then the Path to WTC, and it's only a 3 block walk from there!

how many times do i have to say this.. customs takes about 30 seconds

it's the queue for immigration that can take some time..

i normally work out a total time for immigration, collecting bags, and customs.

the longest was around 1 and a half hours
    the quickest was 22 minutes..

thanks for the recommendation of the new york pass, a great way to waste £110 if you DON'T want to visit the attractions, but want to wander the streets of new york.. ;)

P.S, a quick search through this thread, would have shown you we discuss both those points nearly on a weekly basis!
  • Going on the 23rd with OH and kids aged 13 & 8. Any particular recommendations for places to eat? Don't really want to be eating at chain restaurants the whole time and the suggestions we have had so far from friends look a little too upmarket.

Also, markymoo - did you do your day to Washington DC and did you think it was worth the trip?

Just bringing this up again in case anyone feels inclined to anwer. :D

oops... that post flew past me.....

Places to eat... well, give opentable.com a search, and then menupages.com as well, opentable you can book at menupages you can, erm see menu's. Plenty of smaller restaurants, that are not "upmarket" are around in NYC, and with the kids, you're probably going to be eating earlier, but it's perfectly normal to see children in restaurants pre 8pm anyway..

as for DC, yes i did a whirlwind trip of DC... plane through to Reagan airport, then the Metro into town, walked around all the monuments i wanted to see and take photos of, down the national mall, and then grabbed some lunch. Back to the airport, bumped to an earlier flight, and then back to NYC..

i chose a good day to do it too, raining in NYC, but glorious sunshine in DC.

DC is worth a day trip, but only if you've been to NYC numerous times, and you want something a bit different. There is plenty to see and do in NYC, so if you're on your first visit, save places outside of Manhattan for other times you may revisit..
